im a little ignorant about all the external vs genetic causation of pathology, but im a materialist, and i believe we as humans tend to put a bigger culpability on genetics because we dont want to accept that disease might be because of the activities we do. In other words, we have the tendency to reject the idea of individual responsiblity. just like a "fatboy" might blame genetics on his corpulent nature instead of his diet or daily activities. dont misunderstand me, i believe genetics plays a major role but that role is no more than 60%. for example, with cancer only 5% of cancers are genetic, and most are from external factors.

Okay, now I understand the why :). But still, I totally agree with you :D. People always want to blame what they can't control. And it's totally true that most cancers are because of external factors, especially smoking 8O .
