rating anything

Post by indy »

hey,
I just wanted to see how others rate things. I was thinking about it today as i read a blog.(how I rate something without any feedback someone might take it the wrong way) hence the problems with ratings(plain numbers). I don't mean the popularity contest aspect I mean the scale and the subjectiveness. on a 1-10 I tend to think that 7 is avg, so anything 8 or above is good others do not. I know some believe 1-10 means 5 is average. It dosent just show up on website ratings. When I worked at the bank instead of the normal 1-10 scale the tellers were graded on a 1-7 scale (from internal and external customers) and that just messed with people it was a weird scale (anything there below a 6.8 was considered bad.) no feedback just rate a cat. with a number. the problem I comes in that we quantify everything (hey were cel collectors, this is better than that this gets priority over that). I tend to think nothing is perfect (something could always use improvement or it would appeal to everyone so we instantly knock out the top score(lets use a 1-10 scale for example) so were down to 1-9 to rate someone. Now were going to reserve the 9 for those things that really grab us or we think is above and beyond. (so most things are now 1-8) now unless something is really screwed up I'm not going to give a 6 or below (so in reality most things are either going to get a 7 or an 8) that leaves the rankings with 6 for do again, 7 for average, 8 for above, 9 for super, and 10 for godly. how about others? what do you think or tel me about a screwed up incident in your lif involving ratings.
- heres one for me when I was at the bank. We got our monthly report (we had to have a 6.8 internal and same on external) well I got a 4. something or other on an external because there was a set of ratings that were all 1's and another that was 1's and 2's. because of this I had to go to development classes 3days of training, write a report have ,a peer evaluation, and an employment review(to see if the training took or,if i should be relocated or terminated). well a couple weeks go by and there was this nice little old lady that came in all the time she loved coming to me didn't matter where I was she would follow me branch to branch. well she got one of the random surveys for how was your visit. in the begining of the call they tell you how the rating system works but you can opt out of it by pressing pound (it says before the ratings are explained "if you would like to continue on to the survey press pound") so she did theya asked her questions rating me on 1-7. she gave me all 1's because I was the best, i was #1, couple days later same story from another customer. I could have lost my job all because it was an anyomous survey with no real feedback to the scores. (doh, after thinking about this maybe I should send feedback when I rate)

How funny, today seems to be a poll day.

I voted that 7 is average, but this is because of my personality and not any kind of process or scientific method. I like to make people feel good. So if I see something "average," a 7 it will get. If it's truly good, I'll move up to 8 and 9. If it's really bad and I can't lie to myself, then 6 or 5.

If it's worse than that, I won't rate. :P

Just my 2 cents American!

I usually rate people 8-10 unless they are really bad. In that case, i just dont vote.

I dont vote unless I feel the site is a 7 or above.

I hate seeing ppl's website ratings go down :x because a couple of jackasses cant keep their mean opinions to themselves. Just because someone has very few cels, dont collect the current trend *IY, Naruto, FMA etc* or they arent in the 500+ price range doesnt mean its a 'bad' gallery. :?
Ive been tempted to just do away w/ my own rating poll on my gallery because really it serves no purpose. I collect what I like, if noone likes it, they dont have to look at my site. I really dont care.

If its the design that is just "EEEEEEEEEEEECKK" I usually just sent them a feedback comment w/ some suggestions on how to improve it. But other than that, I agree w/ what D.W and Uende said. :)

I used to rate things with 7 as an average, but a few years ago I realized that a 5 out of 10 worked out better for me. Now I just rate things with the mid point in the number scale being average. But most of the things I rate still tend to be rated above the mid point because I'm not seeking things out at random, but seeking things that appeal to me.

If I encountered things at random there should be an equal number of items rated above and below the mid-point and items of equal distance from the mid-point should be of equal occurence.

For those scales where it's obvious that people are rating things on a 7 average in a 1-10 scale then I adjust how I rate in it. I agree with you. Ratings scales need to be explained more in ratings polls.
