Two-Sister Hair Lengths

Post by Keropi »

I know anime/manga artists often draw characters in ways that symbolize certain things. Heights between same-gendered characters often vary somewhat according to authority levels. Older characters (in their fifties/sixties and older) are often drawn with shrunken heights, etc.

But there's something else I've been wondering about. Generally speaking, when there are only TWO blood-related sisters, the older sister will more often have long hair while the younger sister will have short (or at least shortER) hair. In the older anime I've seen, this seemed to happen even between twin sisters. I guess the character designers (actually the manga creators) might have been trying to demonstrate a symbolic "maturity" for the older sister by giving her longer hair. This hair length thing seems to happen more often in shounen/seinen(young mens) anime/manga. Maybe because the older sister is more likely to be the love interest of the main male character.

So my question is:

Besides D.N.Angel, what other anime have had TWO-sister "families" where the older sister had MUCH SHORTER hair than her younger sister?

I'd like to know. :)

I'd also like to know if this older sister(long hair)-younger sister(short hair) thing doesn't happen as often as it used to (say eight to ten years ago)?

I am not sure b/c this is cultural stereo-type or not but in fact I have a younger sister (so we are two sisters :) ) and I have long hairs and my sister has short hairs :rollin

Yeah you are right about it and I have not thought about this.....

I now wonder why......

Tenjou Tenge comes to mind. In the beginning of the show they both have ridiculously long hair, but Maya's gets cut off during the show and then hers is much shorter than her younger sister's.

Really? :? I was always taught that shorter hair meant maturity. You have so much responsibility when you grow up that you don't have time for long hair. It takes too much effort when you need to just wash and go.
Can you hear this fangirl squee?!

That's interesting. I didn't watch too far into Tenjou Tenge. Did she spend more time in the anime with long hair or short hair. I suppose if the manga kept going for a long time after that the short hair would have been dominant.

Hmm...I hadn't thought about it that way. ?^_^?

It's just so infrequent when I see older sisters with short hair while the younger sister has longer. I should make a list of when I see it happen again.

Let me see. Off the top of my head here's all the two-sister families I can think of besides DNAngel:

AIR - Hijiri (older) has long hair and Kano (younger) had short hair.
Figures of Happiness game - Twin sisters Mio and Mao both had short hair.
First Kiss Story game - Kana (older) had long hair while Manami (younger) has short hair.
Futakoi/Futakoi Alternative - twin sisters hair were all the same lengths
Kiminozo - Haruka (older) had somewhat shorter hair than Akane (younger) for what 2 episodes? The rest of the anime Haruka had significantly longer hair than Akane.
Pia Carrot 2 - Azusa (older) had long hair while Mina (younger) had short hair.
School Rumble - Tenma (older) had longer hair than Yakumo (younger).
To Heart - Serika (older) and Ayaka (younger) both had long hair.
To Heart 2 Himeyuri twins both had long hair.
Twin Angels - older twin has long hair while the younger twin has short hair.
Wind ~ a Breath of Heart - Nozomi (older) has long hair and Wakaba (younger) has short.

Sorry, I'm thinking up a lot of gaming stuff, but these are the first ones to spring to mind. I was hypothesizing that this hair thing doesn't happen as often in shoujo, but maybe I'm wrong. :shrug

EDIT June 12, 2006:

So in total the list of older sister short hair/younger sister long hair anime list is:
