Animation Cel Appraisal
Well, It's been a while since I've been collecting, due to the wonders of college. But I have now decided to get my Cels Insured, just in case anything were ever to happen. In order to do so, I have to get the cels appraised. My collection consists mostly of DBZ Cels, and a few other random ones. Has anyone ever done this before? I was just wondering if there was a good place to go.

You will probably spend too much to get them appraised, but you can probably get them on your insurance by having your gallery as a record and finding comparable cels on dealer sites to show value.
I have a cost of replacement rider on my insurance (make sure to ask your agent about getting one if you don't already have one.) and with that all I needed was my gallery as a record of what I have. I guess any differences would be worked out if there was a claim, but with the rider the insurance companies get really easy to deal with as long as you don't make them feel like you are trying to take advantage of the situation. (I had a fire)
Check it out before you pay anyone for appraisals.

appraisals and insuring cels
i was wondering about this as well. Lately, my collection slowly grows and my choice of cels began to reflect a change in my tastes and quality of artwork. I am very pleased about my transition; but, I am concerned about the safety of my artwork as I leave the book suspended on a cable perpendicuarly in the dark abyss of the closet at home.
I was even contemplating whether the bank would allow me to store the book in a safety box. I am sure they would ask for an appraisal first.

Re: appraisals and insuring cels
You know if your that worried you can always just purchase a home-safe and store them in that. Also most likely if you ever had a robber come in they most likely have no idea what those are lol. (hopefully of course you never get robbed though).ginga123 wrote:i was wondering about this as well. I would not waste the money on the safe because they will not keep enough heat out to keep the acetate from deforming. Paper is easier as it can handle higher temperatures before discoloring and burning.
You can probably get a safe deposit drawer with an inventory (like your gallery)

I had asked my home insurance guy about this, because I have one of those storage-center rooms - on higher ground and further away from the ocean, so in case of a hurricane, my cels and collectibles would go there, with the stuff already there.
He said there is a separate policy for collections that also covers off-site (aka not in the home) losses. That's with Allstate, anyway. I really need to take pictures of my cels in the books (with a digital camera, just opening the book and putting two in a shot should do. It's just the doing that isn't getting done!).
For pricing, I'v kept printouts of most of the sale pages I got my cels from, or payment pages. Also, when I see a similar cel or sketch come up, I usually print out that page as back-up (unless the price it's going for now is too far below what I paid!).
