Baby Kitten for Christmas...

Hey Everyone.... Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! (Okay I know I am late on both)

I thought I would just share the small bundle of joy that was very unexpectly given to my sister as a Christmas present. My family is the proud owner of a new baby siamese! Her name is Winnie.



While my family is far from being new with cats, we already have 4, but we have never had a kitten this small. When we got her she was only 6 weeks old, which we thought was too young to be away from her mom, but what could we do?



However... she is insane; she jumps on people like she was a bear as they walk by, chases my other siamses even when they hiss at her, and literally plays until she passes out a lap or on a bed. She is the funniest little thing in the world, so independent and not afraid of anyone or anything.



Unforunately my other 4 siamese don't really care for her at the moment, 3 of them hiss at just the sight of her and the other one gets eventually annoyed with her constantly smacking him. It will take them another week or so to get use to her.



I just thought I would share this with all the other cat owners out there and maybe yall have some similar stories you would want to share about the joys of cat ownership.

Cats don't rule, YOU rule. When you start believing that cats rule is when your house becomes the cat's- and the n it's not the cat that's living with you, it's you that's living with the cat.

I got a kitten from the animal rescue shelter last july. There's no point in having a cat unless you get it from a kitten. When they become adults, they don't give a crap about anything other than themselves. Over time I learnt how much of a smarty pants the cat that lives with me now is... best thing about this one is that he never tells you when he needs to exit the room to do his business, and so I find three massive shits bigger than the actual animal on my rug. I'd have a dog, but they require more attn: plus i don't have the time and the money for one.

I'd say Winnie being a girl cat, she'll settle in soon. We adopted a boy cat that had obviously had a rough go with his previous owners: he'd been neutered, declawed in his front paws, and had some of his baby teeth extracted, and then abandoned at a "we humanely euthanize your unwanted pets if they're not adopted quickly" type shelter.

Fortunately for our Ollie, my wife was teaching at a college where one of the other part-timers was a pet's rights activist. On hearing that we needed a cat with some backbone to put up with Socks, our very undisciplined beagle-mix, she served as the go-between, extracted the cat from the shelter and brought him to our house. He seemed fully grown, but was hungry all the time (we named him Oliver for obvious reasons), and he ended up growing half again as big, easily the biggest cat I've ever owned.

And, yes, he had spectacular fights with the dog who was three times his size and whom he could knock clear over on her side if he got a good running start. And the two became inseparable friends:



Sadly, our Socks died a year ago last July, and Ollie, now 13 years old, has been a great deal more clingy since then. But if you wake him up from one of his sunspot naps suddenly, you'll still get a wristful of sharp teeth.

Hope your new little one is starting to settle in. I ended up with 2 siamese kittens last year for Christmas and it took a few weeks to integrate them with my Bengals. There was one holdout who didn't like them for months, but even he eventually came around. They have livened up the older cats and now the whole lot will stampede up and down the stairs together on occasion.

Thanks everyone for the comments on my kitten.

I enjoyed reading some of the other adventures that people have had with their pets.

Sensei - I am sorry to hear about the passing of your dog Socks, but I am glad to hear your cat Ollie is doing well. We had two of our cats pass away two years ago, the brother and sister of LuLu (the darkest siamese the group picture). She was so udderly lonely after both of her siblings deaths that we had to get another cat so she wouldn't wander around the house crying. What ended up as getting one more cat apparently became 4 more. But she is now 12 and is doing well for her age, considering Siamese don't live as long as other cats.

Well I am happy to report that Winnie has settled in quite nicely. The other cats are more or less use to her by now, only a few hisses here and there. I will probably post some more pictures of her in a few months when she is mostly grown. I believe she will be a Seal Point Siamese, the same coloring as LuLu (darkest cat) up top.

What an adorable kitten, Dragonball Sub-Z! She looks like she has quite the trouble-maker personality already, and I'm sure she is going to be a lot of fun to have around. (Well, she already is, even! )

Your other cats are beautiful. I love Siamese -- by far and away my favorite cat breed. The cat I have now, though, is just a little calico, with a super sweet personality and blue, blue eyes. She kind of "adopted" me, but we are both happy with the arrangement.

I have to disagree with this. My current cat is a stray that, like I said, kind of "adopted" us. She was treated very badly by her previous family -- who, actually, moved out of their house and left her and their other cat behind with no food and no one to care for them. I kept thinking they would come back for the cats, but months went by, and they never did. When I found the cats had broken into our garage to eat our dog's dry dog food, I decided enough was enough, and I rescued them.

Anyhow, she was an adult when she came to live with us, and she moved into a house with a very rambunctious dog (Springer Spaniel, who, at the time, was around 10 or 11 and going strong!). She adjusted well to the household, and is the most loving cat I've ever owned -- including ones I raised from kittens. She is with me all the time -- follows me around the house, and is never far away when I am writing or surfing the internet. When our daughter was born, I have to admit I worried a little bit about how the cat would adjust. But, I shouldn't have. Our cat adores our daughter, and has been extremely gentle and patient with her. Truly, this cat has been a wonderful blessing in our household, and, no matter how mad I still get at thinking of the callous owners who abandoned her, I can't help also thinking I was lucky they did.

Our two "Crotchedy Old Ladies" -- Buffy and Brandy (the old dear who passed a few months back) were rescuees from the shelter and were about a year old each when we got them. Brandy was always a little aloof, but there was never any doubt that she loved being with us. And Buffy - who is now 20 and feisty as ever - is convinced that we are her pets. She's an amazing cuddler.

Emily, my constant ornament, we got when she was about four or five weeks old. She isn't any different than the others, as far as I can tell, aside from not wanting to recognize the fact that she is, indeed, feline and not human

Any pet treated kindly can be a loving part of your home. As a child, I watched my grandmother rescue a beautiful but very abused calico named Tammy. She was SO antisocial... and I was so determined to be her friend (she gave me the only cat-scars that still show on my body). After lots of attention and patience she became the wonderful cat she was naturally, and she had 18 wonderful years with us
