Why Do you not (if you dont) post a thread update?

Post by EternityOfPain »

This question goes out to all those individuals who are like the secret update individuals.. I know several people here who dont post there updates and new additionals and I was just wondering why (as in they do not post a thread update in the gallery section). If its not something you like its fine, I am only posing this thread to hopefully get some solid reasons as to why thats all.

I haven't done it in a while. Why? Fear of rejection. I don't collect series that most people are interested in and I'm afraid there will be no reply posts. I recently did a substantial update and thought about posting a thread, but I chickened out.

Awww Vapalla, you shouldn't think like that! :O I love your collection! I'd be sure to post replies in your update thread if you made one. You should definitely post update threads so your adoring fans can keep up! :friends:

I always try to make update threads, even tho I collect crap. I do tend to forget to make the thread till waaaay later, but it's nice to get input from fellow collectors and update threads seem to be an ok way of getting some.

I don't b/c I really don't care anymore...LOL. No one ever seemed to of cared if I posted an update on here or not...so I just stopped. Not worth the breath I guess.

There's still a few nice ppl out there though who bothered to reply...But the majority didn't.

I have started update threads a few times but not often (three times in the 3 1/2 years I've been at beta).

Most of the time, I update only 1-2 cels at a time. It doesn't seem worth the trouble to make an announcement for so few. Two of the times that I stared posts were times that I had updated with more than 10 cels at once. The third time was because I had promised to mention when a particular cel had arrived from Japan.

I seriously doubt that the current contents of my gallery would be of interest to very many people. Post updates?? Nah, I don't want to bore anyone. :^^:

I just don't like drawing too much attention to myself in certain areas (like gallery updates).

I tried posting my updates for three weeks on another BBS (a non-cel/sketch BBS), but I only posted them there because:

1. It's a very slow board with too little posting going on. I have to try to keep it active.
2. No one there collects any production art.
3. Posting updates encouraged me to update more.

Unfortunately during that three week span, the search engine bots obtained all my pictures/links and posted them all over the place. So even though I renamed them weird names, etc. - nothing slowed them down.

In MY case (MY case only, this pertains only to ME, NOT anyone else. I'm NOT talking about anyone else...okay? :P ):

1. Completely private gallery = extremely boring collecting hobby.
2. Semi-private gallery = not so fun either.
3. Low profile gallery = the best option in my case.
4. Open rubberslug gallery/posting about updates = too much attention attracted. Negative elements begin to gather around you.

Too much attention causes its own problems. I'm sure a number of you are already aware of those negative aspects.

It may only be me, but I feel that lowering my profile decreases the likelihood of running into rude collectors, rude offerers, collectors with grudges, rival auction saboteurs, stalkers, image stealers, artwork comparers. I've noticed that the harder I've made it to find my pages, the more likely I've only had to deal with genuinely nice people. They are either friends of mine, fans of the anime or fans of the artwork. These are the people that make collecting so much more enjoyable.

The increased attention gained is not worth the negative stuff that comes with it.

I've posted updates before, so I don't know if this applies... But the truth is I hate posting updates coz I dunno I guess I'm not so confident. But I do post once in a while or when it's really major for me. I still love what I get tho. *confused*

I used to post update threads a lot when I first started collecting and joined Beta. Now, though, I hardly ever post them. I guess my reasons lie somewhere between "fear of rejection" that Vapalla mentioned (I had a pretty negative experience with one update thread in the past, which had a lot to do with changing my mind on posting them) and the 1-2 cel updates that a couple of other folks mentioned.

Used to, I would wait until I had a stack of stuff to update. Now, though, I find things go better for me if I grab a few minutes here and there during my day to scan, tweak the images, and update as things come in. For me, it's a better system, but it seldom seems worth it to me to have an update just for one or two cels. There have been a couple of times that I was tempted to do it -- for really special cels -- but I ended up not.

My last update thread went pretty well, though. Maybe I'll start posting them sometimes -- when I get enough things in to make it worth folks' time. :)

Mostly due to laziness /hmm Once I've scanned and posted...I kinda feel like my work is done, sometimes I'll go back and blog later to point out the update, but for the most I let it be :run

That's like me. I did on very few occasions post my updates. But that was only when I had a number of cels to add and not just 1 or 2.

I do (usually) post an update thread, but I'm considering joining Vapalla and Tex-chan (who often are the only ones to notice my updates, and they usually send me RS feedback or private email rather than commenting here). Really, my collecting habits are off at a tangent from the rest of Beta, and so the numbers of people willing to look at even high-end cels from a series that they haven't seen is pretty small.

I had a very complicated series of four updates close together (courtesy of Anime Museum, a private sale, YJ, and Mandarake) in December, and so I tried a continuing thread to run these four updates together. On a smaller collectors' board, this seemed to work, with people maintaining just one thread and periodically updating it to announce a new cel or batch.

But it didn't really work on Beta. Even though I had some tasty stuff in each of the installments, really the numbers of people who responded got to be embarrassingly small by the end, and I felt like I was milking the thread to get responses, any responses.

I have a second batch of YJ winnings coming in early next week, and probably I'll just post the swag without a thread, as it really kinda fits the last four in kind. I mean, who other than me is going to cheer to see two cels go up from the 80s vintage anime series "Grimm Masterpiece Theatre" (aka "Grimms' Fairy Tale Classics")?

I don't normally post an update thread unless it's something I really would like to announce. I generally have been very good with updating as soon as I get cels, but lately I've been a real slacker (and I've been out of state as well) so I have a nice pile near the scanner to scan. I did a big update Christmas Eve, and I thought I'd post about that one, and I'm about to do another major one here soon, which I haven't decided if I was going to announce or not.

Generally when I'm updating a few cels, I don't post an update. Now there are a few exceptions, like if I get a dreamcel that I've had my heart set on for quite a while, or if it's several wishlist-type cels that I am happy to finally get.

It's a hit or miss. I generally check out updates even in series I don't collect, but I don't normally post generally because I usually am checking those threads during my lunch break or when I am in between doing things. So please, if you post in the gallery section and feel like no one ever bothers to check your thread, keep in mind there's one out there who is silent in posting, but very much checking out your updates. :) You can usually see this when your hit counter keeps creeping upward...so even if you don't get any posts, keep an eye on your counter; it will tell you that people have been visiting. :D

For me, posting an update thread seems to be the only way I get any feedback at all. Even then, I had to bump my last update with some additional items I forgot to add, or it probably would have ended up with zero responses. It's what happens when a thread gets buried. I think it was my own fault for posting my thread and then posting in a bunch of other threads...I ended up burying my own thread. :P

My gallery seems to have an extremely low profile...in 1.5 years I've only gotten four genuine feedbacks, two solicited offers and three unsolicited inquiries/offers (all very polite, and I don't mind them). If my gallery had been private, I'd have gotten even less, including one that led to a pleasant encounter.

I try to save everything for one really big update, because I've also noticed that it can be easy to miss the fact that someone is using the same thread for multiple updates (unless they keep changing the thread title with the date of the newest update). I suppose updating so infrequently helps my low profile too...as well as the fact that I don't have any of most of the huge series (Dragonball, Inuyasha, Naruto, etc. I have some Sailor Moon, but nothing that would ever be in demand).
