Understanding Dealer Mentality?

Ok... I know the title may seem a bit confusing so ill specific what I am referring to. First, I realize that dealers are out to make money and everything but in general speaking would they prefer all the art to go to the same person? I am not saying buying in bulk, but rather they know where all the art is going for future reference or do they perhaps feel the art should be kept together? I know several dealers who give preference to a certain individual(s) prior to placing the cels on there for sale page, I understand that if you know the person chances are your wanting to help them out but could it be that they also want all the cels etc to go to a sole person rather some random buyer? Perhaps I am trying to read into it to much just trying to understand that other then the money incentive of selling to a single person (who may pay the $) is it possible because they wish for it to all go to the same home?

This is just speculation but I am wondering what your take is.

I think part of it might just be the dealer and buyer over time having worked out a relationship of sorts... Just doing a lot of business. Maybe the buyer asked the dealer to keep an eye out for certain shots... or perhaps the dealer just knows that the buyer always bought Kenshin cels, so when they get new ones in they'll send a message to the buyer seeing if they are interested or not. SO yeah, I think a lot could be a long term buyer-seller relationship type thing.

With my experience with dealers, they will contact a few people that have bought alot of high end cels from a particular series (and they know they will be able to shell out enough money to get the new goods that they have) and have them give offers for the new cels. This is good for the dealer because they can make a killer profit, and it is good for the collectors because they get their hands on the cels that they have wanted for awhile. Even if they have to pay more than what they would have paid if it was sold on the dealer's website, they at least get to own it and not kick themselves because they were not at their computer when the site was updated. @_@

There are a lot of flakes in this hobby. Dealers receive emails from buyers all the time, asking for certain items or for specific series, payment plans etc. But sometimes, when dealers extend themselves for new buyers, it ends up biting them in the butt later. Buyers will flake out, never email the dealer back, not pay... you get the picture. Remember the trouble Midori had?

If a dealer is lucky enough to form a friendship with a reliable buyer who pays on time, they tend to value those relationships. What business person wouldn't? Cels are a business and good business can be fostered with these kinds of connections. It's simply easier on both parties. I don't think it's always necessarily the dealer's desire to keep the art together or to ensure it all goes to the same person. It's largely their desire to avoid headaches and go with a buyer they know will follow through. Dealers gotta eat!

I would say that the major factor that come into play is buyer-dealer relationships. I'd be hard pressed to consider the dealer wanting the art to go to one buyer just to keep it together. It's about money and reliability.

Totally...I can understand your frustration, but why wouldn't they sell to a reliable buyer? Good customers are always rewarded for providing good business to a dealer and most businesses do this...as its standard business practice. As at the end of the day they're a business...they're there to make money, not to distribute cels evenly among collectors. I mean if you had a customer who you knew bought cels from one series in particular, you'd give them the heads up on up and coming items, not only as common courtesy to thank them for their custom...but to primarily sell the item as soon as possible. It's business.

Dealers are like friends, some hit it off with me and some don't. I only do business with "friends".

I give them a lot of money, they give me first dip to rare cels, a pretty fair relationship

To me, there is the one night stand and there is the life long friends. For one night stand, we both get what we want and leave. Friendship is reserved for long term relationship. After buying cels from over a hundred dealers, I would call three of them my friends.

It's completely understandable that dealers will favour customers that have proved their reliabilityand given them good custom

It works in reverse too. I received an email from a dealer I wasn't familiar with, to let me know they'd just got a great portrait Nadia cel (they must have been browsing Rslug). I loved the cel and the heads up was such a nice touch that they've become one of my fav dealers and I love to shop there.

I'm a cel dealer and the only one who is a professionnal big seller in cels in my country !!
and lot's of my customers are now friends of mine

when i'm going to Tokyo sometimes i buy some things for them ( plastic bags for cels, find a serie in particular, some rare things,...) , it's normal for those who help me to live of my passion !!

i collect cels too ( see my rubberslug gallery ) and i'm friend with some others dealers ( japanese or not ) who do the same thing for me

it's so coooooooooooll

I have a long time good relationship with a few dealers,
and I find that if I email them and ask for a favor, they
are more then willing to go out of their way to help. And
by this I mean, look for a certain wishlist cel for me, or help
me find a present for a friend.

As most others have said here, I think it all boils down
to friendships and good working relationships. That is
the way it is in all businesses, no??
