Hahaha, that's
exactly what my mother said when she learned of this new hobby. She's kind enough to help me receive and store the cels though, which I consider to be a level or two above simply tolerating my hobby

(Living across the globe at the moment) As for friends, some are interested in them because they've seen the show, or just think the creation process is interesting. Others bluntly say they can't understand the hobby at all, which is fine and dandy. They have hobbies I would never be interested in as well

None have really expressed interest in getting any cels, except one friend who is already on this forum and started collecting a long time before me.
As for the other parts of the question: I don't keep my cels hidden, but I don't really talk about them either (except with aforementioned friend). They usually only come up if it's Sunday night and I mention I wanna head back to bid on something..to which they normally ask what, and I tell them XD The cels
are quite literally hidden away in a closet, but that's for their own good.
Other "odd" hobbies: Figure collecting (less expensive but takes up waaaaaay more space and they are lately even harder to procure than cels, at least for One Piece figures), cosplay (which is a lot harder to explain an interest in than cels XD), and the more average drawing, tennis, video games etc. I'm quite social but most of my hobbies are "me time" activities. I actually do have a surprisingly large amount of "real-life" friends that cosplay, collect figures, or both, but only one who collects cels. It may be a money issue or they simply aren't interested in owning any.
So...I suppose it would be nice to have more people around who like cel collecting, but at least we have the forum ^_^
