When your cel smells...

Post by kizu »

I have one cel that smells vinegary..... Anyone know what I can do about it? Or how I should store it? I don't want to junk it because it's a nice cel and I like the character. X|

I never had that happen myself so I'm not sure. What series is it?

Mmmmm....I know that the cels from the anime:
"The Brave of Gold Goldran" smell really really weird....I don't have them with me, but I know it's a VERY weird smell....I think it may be due to the paint or plastic used, since it does look different than my other cels.....
Not sure how to stop the smell.....

Air it for a few days for the smell to dissipate. I'm not sure if you can get rid of it entirely. Could be the acidic fumes from the acrylic paint, may cause cel warping. When you store it, don't bag it and try to let it breathe.

Kata - it's a cel from Daimos, it's a 70s robot show... It's the only one however that smells out of all my cels. :(

moonrabbit - LOL... Yes it's very funky. It's probably the paint reacting to the acetate but then again, why would my other cels from the same show not have this problem... Hmm...

Cordelia - I'll try it. The odor is really strong... Ay but I really like this cel. I guess this is where they got the "let your cel breathe" reason. I never could figure out why that.

Kizu, it's the acetate itself :( ...

Here's another forum's discussion about the problem, but referring to film leader:

http://www.efilmforum.com/showthread.php?t=8368

and one about microfilm:

You can look up Vinegar Syndrome to find many articles about it.

some of my cels stink too and ive been wondering if maybe putting baking soda where i keep my cels will maybe help minimize it? the powder wont be touching the cels, of course (ill get those freezer boxes where you open the sides and they have a film so the soda wont get out but where it can breathe)?
idunno, just a thought. its really concerned me too. its so strong. X|

Thanks for the info. At this point I removed it from my regular storage and placed it in a frame all by its lonesome. Kind of sad to think the acetate is corroding. It's only been 30 years... Kind of reminds me the transient nature of these cels. :l

Hmm... interesting thread because i've always wondered about my Berserk cels - about 90% of which smell of TCP/Anti-septic. :? A couple of them are framed now, and a couple i keep in a well aired storage cupboard, but the smell hasn't dissipated.

Is there any danger here do you think?

Wild! :o The only thing I've had smell unusual was a set of sketches that very obviously came from a smoker.

Now, my husband is going to really doubt my sanity as I go sniffing my cels! :P

Acetate film diagnosis/storage

Post by kizu »

Thought this article on acetate film was rather interesting... Cold temps help but that kind of goes against the paint maybe?
