If I want a cel and someone else wants it all they have to do to get it is either outbid me or buy it before me. If they don't get it that's just too bad, because that's how the game is played.

Now if I see a cel that I kinda like but don't REALLY REALLY want, and I see a familiar face going for it, I'll let have it.

Seriously though, the only person that collects cels that I have any idea of
what they're bidding on is Baakay and we usually work something out so that
we don't conflict much. Like, for example, there were four Gokudo-kun cels
up on eBay that we both wanted. We chatted and decided that each of us
prefer two different ones and split up our bids that way on them. Though,
the whole thing would've been more effective if she'd lived up to her end
and actually got the cels.

But sometimes we snag things right out from under each other's noses. I remember a Bantaro in black and white that got snatched by a certain someone just as I was about to say "oooo." *grin* But I made up for it on the latest Museum sale with a couple Hunter x Hunter cels.

(Fortunately, I don't think either of us was going to kill for any of the above... were we? )


There have only been a couple of times I've said well heck with it, I'm getting this one no matter what. And then I've lost them anyway. So... it seems more important to compromise. It's not as though I am in lack of other cels.

I do have some collecting friends that I am close enough to that I would never bid against them on a wishlist cel (or even any other cel). But those are rare. Those are TRUE FRIENDS. For example, Drac and I see each other in real life, have known each other for years, and are so close we often share passworded accounts. So obviously that's a different level of friend than most. I won't bid against her on an auction, and I can't recall her ever bidding against me. I have even snapped up genga at Museum for HER because she was at work, even though I liked the set myself. But there aren't a lot of collectors I am friends with like this.

On the other hand, there are lots of collectors that I like a lot, and I wouldn't want to hurt them in any significant way, but they're not close enough to me that we know each others' wishlists in detail, and even if we did, we're still "collectors" first and friends second. I can't imagine they would be offended by my bidding on a cel.

I bid against lots of folks I know (and they bid against me) all the time, and there are never hard feelings on either side. At least certainly not on my part, and based on their emails to me, not on theirs either. When the bidding is over and the smoke has cleared, we usually contact each other and work it out so the "loser" has first dibs if the "winner" ever sells it again. Then everybody is pretty happy.

Let's face it. The cel collecting community isn't THAT big. We know a lot of other collectors. If I refused to bid on things just because I knew someone else who was bidding, I'd never get anything new! We're all mature enough to handle the competition in a friendly way, I hope.

I feel like I'm not wording this very well, but I hope I made some sense.

Here is a good solution.

Talk to your friend, be upfront on how much both of you are willing to pay. Who ever would pay more should get the cel. Whoever 'loses' shouldn't drive the bid up.

I think Lizzard put it very eloquently! I feel I need to elaborate on my earlier post.

This really IS a small community and not bidding against people we know is close to impossible (or even knowing who they are if they're using a deputy). There are only two or three people I can think of offhand that I would e-mail first if I saw they were bidding on something I really wanted. Unless it was something I was DYING for I would probably just let those people have it.

If it was an acquaintance, but I knew how obsessed they were with a particular scene/character/show I wasn't really into I'd let them have it too. If I didn't know who the high bidder was, or didn't have any particular attachment to them, I would go for it.

However, if it was a HUGE MEGA wishlist, and one of those three people were bidding on it I would try to work something out (with tears and begging). But, like I said before, it depends on how much each of us wants the cel and how much we like each other.

If we weren't really good friends or didn't know each other....well....that's what a free-market economy is all about!

I've bid on things others have wanted before, and mostly lost. A few cels, however I know someone else who I'm friends with wanted, and I worked something out. There was one time where I bid knowing the other person was bidding as well, and we were happy saying, GANBATTE NE to each other .

So, look at it from the other friends point of view. SURELY they're not so selfish as to not care of what the other person thinks about this cel and situation. I think if you both truly want it, and one of you can't seem to give it up...Then I hope you both are content with saying "let the best person win ^_^/".

Real friends wouldn't fight over a cel, or be mad at the other for winning it. You'd be happy for them, and knowing that it's in a safe place...AND that you've got first dibs if it should ever be sold.

Also, when I've bid on cels that friends were going for...I give them a price range at which I'll be bidding. It helps them decide if they've got what it takes financially to step up to the plate. It also helps so you both don't drive up the bid >.</!

Anyway...All good thoughts so far, I just think your friend shouldn't be ignorant to your feelings on the cel as well, and the only way to solve it is in a friendly betting game ^_^/!

To reiterate what AO said, you oftentimes have to be cutthroat in the IY cel collecting world. There are many of us that have the same wishlist cel, and sorry, if one person can pay more than you, that's life. I'm not saying that I don't try to work things out, but if there is a wishlist out there, and me and my bestest cel bud want it, may the person with deeper pockets win.

To me that has always been part of the cel collecting game. I've won and I've lost, but we're all still friends in the end.
