Which do you prefer?
Of course, we all would rather have the original matching or at least original copy background. But when the original background is unobtainable, what do you prefer and why?

You mean after I already own the cel?
If I own a cel without an original background, I'd be very unlikely to seek out an unmatching background to go with it. I can't say I'd never do it, but I haven't thought much about doing it before. Maybe once or twice and that's it.
When I buy a cel with an unmatching background I usually just keep it with the cel. But maybe twice before the unmatching background I got looked so horrible with the cel that I pretty much HAD to take it off for my own sanity's sake.
I must admit that I don't like posting a bunch of cels on the same page with no backgrounds. All that whiteness disturbs me.

It looks to be a near landslide so far.
What got me thinking about this is that I got my GW Heero/Duo cel today and although I love it
, I can't bring myself to scan it and put it into my gallery without first finding a complimentary background to go with it. I was wondering if I was the only one with a strong aversion to white spaces. I guess not.
On the flipside though, there is something very jarring about seeing a cel with a background that clearly shouldn't be paired with it. I have a cel like that and it bugs me every time I look at it. Eventually, I will have to fix it.
Maybe if I could see your cels I would be able to validate your claims.

I don't know if I believe you.Moop wrote:I voted for non-matching, because a nice one can enhance the cel's appearance. When it comes to the cels I love the most, though, I commission a fan artist to reproduce their matching backgrounds.

I forgot to mention.....some of them you dont need an unmatching background and i wouldnt want one, such as my Broly cel... http://dbzgt.rubberslug.com/gallery/inv ... emID=95631
You wouldnt really be able to see the background if you put it in back of this cel.

Btw, if you want a matching bg for that GW cel, I can recommend a terrific artist.

I like a nice background. Until recently though, it's been a case of have and have-not. If a cel came with a background, it was stapled to it, and so I left it. But now I've carefully pulled the staples from backgrounds to cels and seperated them. So now, voila, I have a bunch of backgrounds!
Now all that's left is to get off my lazy duff and rescan the ones without backgrounds.......
Yeah, maybe later....

Lol, I wanted to add it just for you, but I don't think I can.kymaera wrote:You forgot the "I prefer to dl Krafty's bg and then sell the cel on eBay" option

I've done that for several of my cels and have been thrilled with the results. But in this case it's not worth it. The BG is basically just a blackened doorway with green walls on the side, so I just need to hunt for something simple to go with the cel.moop wrote:Btw, if you want a matching bg for that GW cel, I can recommend a terrific artist.

Oh, and it's no conspiracy on my part. I just love a good mystery.

I guess I'm against the grain here. Out of 219 posted cels, most have either the original bg or none. Only 15 have non-matching production backgrounds. Of those, 6 are laser copies, 2 are from the same show but a different scene/frame, and 2 I don't know whether its a matching production bg or not. This leaves only 5 completely unrelated bgs.
One reason I don't match then together is that I am a bit of a purist. I have plenty of bgs (250+) that I could try to match up with my cels, but I prefer to see the cels stand alone. In my eyes, they are pretty enough as they are.
Another reason is that I enjoy bgs for themselves, I would hate to hide one behind a non-matching cel.
Finally, I'm too lazy to go to the trouble of buying/scanning a bunch of bgs just to see what works. I would have to find 128 bgs to match up the unaccompanied cels in my gallery. Believe me, that ain't happening.
