If you are a girl and you wear a pantsuit to an on-campus interview they go into a foaming at the mouth FIT because there is still a VERY prevalent idea amongst the legal profession that women only look professional when wearing a skirt
First off let me say that I agree with you. Completely. :-) Bumps in the wrong spot = 10-15% less salary, regardless of any other factors.

However!!

There are some of the women I've seen walking down the street around here recently who would give a Career Services lady a full-blown attack. If they only knew what they looked like from the, uh, rear. Makes the A-line skirt seem like a Real Fine Thing, let me tell you!!

"The fighting racoons in the shirt" made me think of this in terms of a great line from an episode of MASH, where Hawkeye asks Hotlips if she's put on weight because from the back she looks like "two strange bulldogs in a bag."

Wheeeee..... (it's even funnier because I know perfectly well that right now I resemble that remark...)

While you have good points about the "lady lawyer" and the pay, I really
can't sympathize too much with the clothing issue. It seems to me that
women lawyers would have more freedom than men lawyers in what they
could wear and be seen as professional. For example, men are pretty much
stuck in suits and ties. And they have a limited amount of colors that they
can get away with: black, grey, dark blue, white and brown (maybe a few
more aside from that). Outside of that, they begin to look more like a pimp
who needs a lawyer than a lawyer. For example, a man in a purple suit
would look more like Liberace than a lawyer, but I think that a woman could
wear one and look fine. Also, they are pretty much restricted on accessories.
Women can wear various types of jewelry, different colored belts, shoes, etc.
About all a man has to accessorize with is a tie.

I'm just glad that I'm in a job where no one really cares what I wear.
I'm currently wearing a Megatokyo t-shirt and shorts and that's what I
wore to work today.

Btw, the MOB is looking for a good lawyer to represent them in a sexual
harassment case. With your strong views on the injustice of such activities,
sounds like it would be a prefect fit for the job.

Oh, and for the record, I have nothing against women in red suits.

Feeling wardrobe restricted? Move to Louisiana! Seersucker opens up a whole new world of professional dress possibilities! It's not just for over 60's down here! :rollin

Plus, I know at least one defense attorney (male) who regularly wears eggplant and bright-red colored suits to work. Pimp? Or Pimpin'? :D

And Baakay, I'm sure you have an absolutely fabulous tooshie that resembles a much cuter dog :P

I wouldn't hire him. But then again, I think a female lawyer could wear an
eggplant or red suit without looking ridiculous.

I would comment, butt it might not be wise. So, instead, I will choose an
emoticon completely at random...I repeat..completely at random.

Hey, I'm feeling pretty random myself this evening with a weekend of transcribing thoughts about Lone Wolf and Cub ahead of me... so... in that spirit:

Oh, yeah...

And given than I've known you for what, 11 years now? and have never seen you wear anything other than some variation of the above, it makes me wonder upon what grounds you speak for the fashion-conscious of the male persuasion! :nya:

Lucky dog...

Lynxa: it's definitely bulldogs right now. :shrug

Ugh. I wish I only had blue or black or brown to chose from in suit form. As it is, I have a handful of "pant suits" and only one really formal suit (black). Women don't have just colors to chose from, we have flavors of colors! X|

As a high school teacher, there's no way in hell I'm going to wear a skirt.

Oh ... doesn't this bring back lovely memories of my law-school days, when one of my female classmates made the mistake of wearing a red suit to a mock trial, where she was playing the part of a plaintiff's lawyer trying to recover damages for the wrongful death of a teenager. Our professor made her go home and change --- yes, that's right. He stopped the mock trial as soon as he walked in and saw what she was wearing (we had just done opening statements), and made us all wait for her to go home and change.

Or ... what about the time another of my classmates made the unfortunate decision to wear red fingernail polish to class. She got called on by the professor, who immediately noticed the bright red fingernail polish, told her she looked like a "lady of the evening" (although he used much more colorful language I shall not repeat here on the board), and kicked her out of class.
Lynxa wrote:There is also an irritating prevalence in the profession amongst male lawyers over the age of....oh....about 45, who still persist in calling us "lady lawyers". :x
Ah ... and shades of my first boss. He used to say, of me and one other "lady lawyer" in the firm, that we were "pretty smart for a FEMALE attorney".

Oh, how I hated him.

But, we managed to get even. The other "lady lawyer" was from New Orleans, and, every month, her mom would go home to visit family. We almost always took up a collection to purchase a curse on our boss ... :evil2

Ah ... the salad days.

Oh yes. These and so many other tales reaffirm the wisdom of my decision not to finish law school. I would seriously have had to kill the torts professor at some point... or the civil procedure professor (who I went to work for as a paralegal, after I quit school...)

I've never been able to figure out why they think cruelty is a good way to teach people. :? ("We suffered, so you must, as well!!")

Most of our professors are really great (some do smack of "Paperchase" or "Full Metal Jacket"). This being New Orleans we're all pretty laid back. It's the work load that sucks.

Oh yeah, did I mention the lawyers? Most male lawyers are pigs. My mom is a legal secretary, I grew up around lawyers, I deal with a lot of them now, and....well.....it seems like the majority of them are big giant pigs. Remind me to tell you guys about the time one of them licked me at an official function.

And Kymaera? You've been wearing the same thing for the past 11 years and you're complaining about a lack of career dress options for guys???? :rollin

The same type of clothing. Not the same clothing. There is a difference :P
And the subject was dress options in the legal field, not in general. As I
already said, I'm happy to have a job where no one cares what I wear as
long as it's within the common standards of decency.

Oh, and your comment reminds me of a joke:
Why are lawyers like sperm?

It's all part of the process to beat the humanity out of people so that they
can be proper lawyers. They start off small and build up to the souldectomy.
