Which are your favorite lesser know Anime?

Post by JWR »

Most of us have favorites that everyone knows IE: Inu Yasha, DBZ , AMG ect.

The question is what lesser known series did you like and why?

I will start with a couple of mine.

Figure 17 - One of the things I really liked about this series was that each episode was 50 minutes long so they had time to "flesh out" the characters in a way that most anime can not.

The World of Narue - This one is just plain fun. The characters are played more like real kids and the comedy & action do not detract from the real story.
"Like the wind crying endlessly through the universe, Time carries away the names and the deeds of conquerors and commoners alike. And all that we are, all that remains, is in the memories of those who cared we came this way for a brief moment." Harlan Ellison

Yakitate!!!!! :D I don't know how popular it is but I don't hear people talking about it too much. What a great, funny anime!!!! When Baakay said that there was a show that had baking bread as its main theme I decided to watch it out of curiosity, but it turned out to be really engaging as well as a complete riot! :rollin

Tenshi ni Narumon of course! I am crazy about Gankutsuou too. I also really like Yakitate Japan (I'm on ep 9 so far and it's really funny!)

I'll third the Yakitate. And -- get this -- Spouzal Unit, who used to keep sourdough starter going all the time (yicky, messy stuff) so that we could eat fresh bread, watched 4 episodes and ran out to get yeast today!! *giggle*

You can tell one of us is watching this when raucous hoots of laughter emerge from a basically silent room. :-)

My favorite lesser known series is the Kakyuusei TV series. I like it because I like the story and I like the type of love triangle that's in it (my favorite kind) and I like the characters a lot. The ending is one of my favorite anime endings. That being said...I don't expect very many people to like this series. Some people are complaining about how old the character designs look (and it came out in 1999). They also claim the pacing is too slow (since they are used to todays anime pacing). I only expect a few ren'ai gamers and a few people already into this type of anime to like it. This means maybe about a hundred people outside of Japan will like it. Certainly less people will like it than liked "To Heart".

One reason I like Tenkousei and Tokimeki Memorial OVA 1-2 is because I like Osananajimi (Childhood friend) stories. I often find them to be pretty cute (Gate Keepers was sort-of an Osananajimi story). Heck...Sadamitsu was an Osananajimi story too and that was a big reason I enjoyed it (the "Japanese helmeted superhero" parody was amusing as well).

I like shounen romance stories and so I also liked Doukyuusei, Doukyuusei Climax Files and Doukyuusei 2. Didn't get as much into Doukyuusei 2 compared to Doukyuusei though.

I liked Refrain Blue because I thought it was very touching and poignant. It's still one of my top favorites.

Sentimental Journey I liked because I had played the Sentimental Graffiti 2 game. I had read the translation of how the girls met the guy, how he affected their lives and then how he moved away. Love held in unexpressed...only to be realized later what was missed and how much he affected them. I liked that theme.

The two Mizuiro OVAs were fun. They were semi-magical, but much less so then Kanon or Air. Hey...this is another Osananjimi story. :P

I enjoyed "Sequence" because I like underlying reincarnation themes. Not necessarily the reincarnation stories where things fall into place by fate, but the stories where people don't realize how their past life is affecting them currently. I enjoy those. They make for powerful drama when they are done correctly. Too bad there was only one OVA for it made. I would have liked to have learned the backstory of it.

I think "Combustible Campus Guardress" holds up very well now even though it is eleven years old. It still makes a great parody of school powered superheros. Great fun. It was done by the Bastard creator. Bastard was sort of a parody too wasn't it? :P

I liked the second ONE OVA series. I thought it was much better than the first OVA. The first OVA (four episodes) was confusing. The second OVA told the story from the guys perspective. By sticking to one person's perspective instead of trying to squeeze everyones in, it made for better drama. In my opinion it was a good time loop story.

Twilight Q was enjoyable. I like time travel related stories. It feels like I haven't watched this anime for about 6-7 years, but it was recently digisubbed. I need to watch it again, but if I'm remembering correctly, this was the anime that reminded me of the sci-fi classic "Slaughterhouse Five".

Sci-Fi Harry was fun. I enjoyed it's erieness (I can never spell that word). It somewhat like "Carrie". The geeky, introverted-to-an-extreme guy gains dangerous killing psychic powers. Is this show ever going to get released or are the rights still tied up someplace?

Other anime I liked that aren't as well known:

Koihime
Campus

Suika OVA episode 2 (adult version is better :D ) - Itsuki the miko...Yay! \o/
Suika OVA episode 3 (non-adult version is better. :sweatdrop That's the version I seen first)

Suika's English title is "Wet Summer Days".

Guren\Red Lotus\Blood Shadow (name changes for translation/legal purposes X| )
Mune Kyun! Heartful Cafe - cute "hentai" anime
Maids in Dream
Iketeru Futari
Touch
H2
Barefoot Gen - based on a true story
Rail of the Star - based on a true story

I agree Keropi, Hakaima Sadamitsu was a very entertaining show! Great mix of comedy and action and that damn theme song! I loved the old school sound!

Zone of the Enders was another series I enjoyed. The father working to bring his family together plot was entertaining!

I'm not sure if Azumanga Daioh would count as lesser known, but I'll add it anyway. It's a really funny anime, with a group of girls and how they continue with life before they take different paths. It really is hillarious. XD

Kanon is an anime I loved. It was so beautiful and sad. It was slightly boring for me to begin with, but it got a lot better. :)

I think "lesser known" describes 90% of my favorites. :D

Hector the Collector loved these things with all his soul,
Loved them more than shining diamonds, loved them more than glistenin' gold.
Hector called to all the people,"Come and share my treasure trunk!"
And all the silly sightless people came and looked...and called it junk.

I'd go for " High School Kimengumi " because it was the series that introduced me to Japanese humour.... the asian counterpart to Looney Tunes.

The Doctor : … and then, just to finish off, I’m going to wipe every last stinking Dalek out of the sky !
Dalek : But you have no weapons ! No defenses ! No plan !
The Doctor : Yeah ! And doesn’t that scare you to death ?

Off the top of my head it's probably Koko wa Greenwood or "Here is Greenwood".

It's a nice little OVA. Cels are non-existent. Ugh!
