I'm going back to Nagoya!!!

Post by Rekka Alexiel »

I'm so excited right now!! I just had an interview via telephone for a job teaching English in Nagoya tonight. I spoke with two different people, answered various questions pretty well, I thought, and shortly after the phone call, I received an official offer for the job! :vict

I'll be going back to my Nagoya either in Sept or Oct. I don't know the exact details right now, since all of this happened within the course of a couple days... but seriously, if anyone is looking for a job in Japan, definitely check out gaijinpot.com. I sent out a zillion different emails with resumes and got little to no response before I applied for stuff on this Website.

So, I'm doing a little--heck no--a HUGE, crazy dance right now! I'll be able to see all my old friends again!! I couldn't be more happier!!! :bny

Is that through that program that allows you to teach for a year in Japan? The government provides for your housing and everything?

If it's not, well, I've heard of an English-teaching program through my University. I might check it out in a few years. :D

Nope, this is completely separate from the JET program, even though I'm still an alternate for that... They sorta made me mad and I gave up the posibility of getting a job through them, so I started looking for jobs myself. The JET sounded awesome to me before...but, really, the job I got is just about the SAME thing in terms of pay and job responsibilities... The only difference is, you don't have much say in where you'll be placed with the JET program. You can say where you'd like to go, but you're not garenteed that location. Whereas with looking for jobs yourself, you can apply to only the places were you'd want to work. I really wanted to go back to Nagoya..so I applied to any that I could find in Aichi. I guess I got lucky!!

So if any of you plan on doing the JET and get disappointed with it one way or the other, you have other options to get to Japan! Just google "Teaching English in Japan" and you'll find all kinds of good websites to start from. I really recommend GaijinPot, too, since that's how I got this job... :D

Lynxa: thanks!! I'm not exactly sure when I'll leave, but I think it'll be in Sept or Oct. The World Expo will be over by then... :( Little bummed about that...but I'm more extatic that I'm going at all!!!

congratulations! I'm sure you'll have a fantastic time. Have they told you what and where you'll be teaching? (which school, what level of English...?)

Okay! I haven't been to Tokyo yet, so I really want to go this time. It'd be cool to meet you!!

I'll be living and teaching in Nagakute-cho, a suburb of Nagoya. It's about 26 min or so from the city, maybe a little more, but that's about the same distance as when I lived in Seto. What's really cool about this is that...I know exactly where Nagakute is even though I've never been there. I had a 2 week internship at an elementary school that's just down the road from the school that I'll be teaching at. Plus, to get into Nagoya, I'd have to take the subway, Higashiyama-sen, which I've been on several times already. So, I'm *really* going back to my old stomping ground!! :D

I'll be teaching English mostly to kindergarteners, but I'll have kids ages 2-12. In previous emails, they said that it's necessary to have a good singing voice for this job...and I was expecting to have to sing on the phone for the interview, too...but thank goodness, they didn't ask me anything about it. lol I guess they teach English with music sometimes, so it would be nice to have someone who can sing on key. lol I'll definitely post again as soon as I know more of the details. This all happened so quickly, I'm still a bit in shock. heehee

I speak little to no Japanese at all. I would love to go and be a teacher, but I would be totally lost by myself :OMG

I went to Tokyo 2 1/2 years ago and almost everyone I met didn't speak any English at all. I was so dependent on my friend. A couple of guys we met were nice, but the one I was with was insane. I kept telling him I spoke no Japanese, but he just kept blabbing on and on :emb It was sooo embarrassing. Because my girlfriend was flirting with the other guy, she was just no help.

I still can't get used to walking everywhere! That is always why I pack comfy shoes. Food is good! I remember one day, we went to McD's (yes, I went to McD's, it was near the last few days before we had to fly back to the states, and I spent a lot of money on stuff and food....) I liked the Teriyaki Burger that they had, but disliked the Ravioli Burger...ugh. The cherry apple pie was good.....wished they had it here in the states. It is hilarious how different McD's is in various places. In Maine, the McD's has lobster rolls during summer, which is unheard of in the Western part of the U.S.A.

Okay, it is 7:37 am. I have to get dressed and out the door in 23 minutes!

Good reason. How long have you two been together?

YAY!!! :yourock:

How cool is THAt?? I'm so happy for you that you're getting to go!!

Not sure whether I just missed this, but... for how long are you going?? Is it a permanent job, or...?

My best friend from high school is in China right now, doing the same sort of thing. I think this is her third trip. She's had one of those "you don't get to choose" experiences, which really was miserable, and one where she did get to choose. This particular one is a 3-week summer institute sort of thing...

I'm so excited for you! Perseverence pays off.
