Deciding Factors for collecting Anime Art
Imagine this. With regard to the anime cels in your collection, you fancy a change. You might have a dedicated gallery to several series you've watched and loved already, but want to begin something new.
If you were to start collecting from a totally new series that you HADN'T seen (thus eliminating any emotional feelings), what would you base your choice(s) on?
Art style? ie The shapes and forms etc
Theme? ie Faeries, Racing, Martial Arts etc
Setting/Design? ie Futuristic, Medieval, Contemporary setting etc
Male/Female/Mecha/Animal characters?
Hair colour???
Availabilty of the artwork?
Cost of the Artwork?
Other?
This might help us put our collections into perspective and help some of us realize why we collect certain art

Good question, krafty. I guess if you remove the sentimental attachment that would draw me to a specific character or scene, I would shop based purely on the art style. It would be just like any other piece of art for the wall that I was drawn to... gotta look at the style and composition and colors of the piece. And since I'm certainly no art connoisseur, I'd just buy what I like the looks of! So I'd probably be buying lots of cels with beautiful-eyed characters and highly detailed mech.

Since you precurse this discussion on NOT having seen the anime before I would have to say that the artistic style of the character design and the overall artwork would be the deciding factor for me.

Re: Deciding Factors for collecting Anime Art
That is a tough question for me to answer. Since I try to watch at least one episode of any anime that at least somewhat interests me, that doesn't leave me with much to base a decision off of.Krafty wrote:If you were to start collecting from a totally new series that you HADN'T seen (thus eliminating any emotional feelings), what would you base your choice(s) on?

Hmm...I'll base it off of the titles that interested me BECAUSE I seen the artwork from them on Yahoo Japan.
Art style? ie The shapes and forms etc
Somewhat. Even though I think a lot of background Mei King cels look great I've never been the biggest fan of the art style they used for that anime/game. (But this is what interested me initially in "Virgin Fleet").
Theme? ie Faeries, Racing, Martial Arts etc
This would be my second highest reason for my decision. The artwork would very likely have to come from a bishoujo or shounen romance anime because that's where most of favorite anime come from. (This was what interested me in the "Tokyo University Story" artwork)
Setting/Design? ie Futuristic, Medieval, Contemporary setting etc
This wouldn't play much of a factor at all in my decision. I don't favor any time period over the other.
Male/Female/Mecha/Animal characters?
I'd say this would be the MOST important reason for my decision. I have just about ALWAYS only collected artwork because of the female characters on the cel. Exceptions are my Mitaka/Godai cels, Jojo's two cels, my Wataru-only Doukyuusei cels and a few others that were mostly freebies.
Hair colour???
Nah. Although I do like pale blue and red hair.

Availabilty of the artwork?
Since I'm looking for artwork from twenty two shows where I've never even seen any artwork from them, the answer would be "No"

Cost of the Artwork?
Somewhat, but the other factors are much more overwhelming. Five Star Stories prices are real good at scaring me away however. And PSME prices work their scary magic on me too.

Hmmm, I didn't have the foresight to include 'Bra Size' in the poll so let's put you in the 'Characters' categoryStartyde wrote:Bust, what...?

When I saw that you had replied Keropi, I smiled. I knew what we were in for and I love it! Thanks for chipping in

As far as I'm concerned, I'd collect judging by the Art Style and Theme. I'm not overly keen on the general shojo themes AND the art styles typically derived from it. Whereas an action/fighting series would have a high-contrast, energetic look in a 'pop-art' manner which appeals to me.

I'd agree with this. I could happily collect artwork based on artist/style and is the most important factor to me.shellie wrote:Good question, krafty. I only collect from series that I have seen so that I do like the show. The
only times when I've not done that have been when the cels were cheap.
As for your categories, the ones that I have opinions on:
Theme: Don't care for mecha or sports much.
Female characters for the most part
Hair colour is varied, but I prefer red heads.
Cost is a factor.

Hm... I've been thinking about it and I reckon I collect two diferent categories of cels.
One being from a favourite series/favourite character designer (ie. Bubblegum Crisis/Kenichi Sonoda's Bean Bandit and Rally Vincent).
The second category is favourite characters in general, from misc anime that I like that doesn't fit into category number one (ie. Ryoga from Ranma 1/2 and Gally from Gunnm). The misc anime shouldn't sound as low-classed as my favourite anime since it isn't, if I like it it's one of my favourites.. just BGC is my ultimate favourite. ^_^
