Auctions (cels + other stuff) for Hurricane Katrina Donation

Post by SME »

In light of the natural disaster known as Hurricane Katrina, I have decided to donate a portion of my proceeds from auctions to both The Salvation Army Hurricane Relief Fund and Disaster Relief Fund for the Humane Society (HSUS). I was trying to think of the best way to come up for money to donate, and I decided that cels are not quite as important than helping out those who are left homeless, jobless and otherwise affected by this devastation.

I was a victim of three hurricanes that hit Florida last hurricane season, and while I only suffered minor damage and loss, I do remember those who came to offer their help to us. It is these selfless acts that are rewarded by knowing that you are there to help out those who have lost everything. I pray for those people who have suffered loss, and only hope that the donations continue to pour in to help the victims get back up on their feet.

My auctions are listed here: Ebay Auctions and please remember, you are helping out those that are in dire need.

You might want to revise your items, because I believe that there is a way to list them so that they show up as charity auctions--check out some of the other posts on the board. I think it gives you a ribbon-like icon after your auction title and then you will show up when people click to "Buy an Item for Relief" on the ebay homepage.

Doh! Since Ebay is being (for a lack of a better word) a butthole, I had to revise the listings that weren't already deleted. Apparently they don't like it if you don't go through THEIR charity auctions. I wanted to donate to the Humane Society (HSUS), and it isn't on their list, so I didn't go ahead with their charity thing.

Plus $10 minimum will be donated for every auction...and some of my auctions had starting bids way below that, with my knowing they will probably not get past the $10 mark...so I was turned off by that, because I feel it should be up to the donators to decide how much to donate. Most of us don't have much money to spare right now, so even thinking about donating knowing money is kind of tight I think is rather generous in itself.

I find this rather annoying and greedy on Ebay's part.

When I started looking at things last night to find out how I might go about listing the manga, etc that I was thinking of putting up, I was a little appalled by this too. I don't need to make a profit off the manga, but neither do I want to go in the hole on it. (Nobody is going to want to pay full price for a used manga!!) And some of the cels I was going to put up would want to start below $10 as well.

Still thinking about this one.

However!! I discovered something else I could do. In one of the nearly hidden paragraphs on the Red Cross site they said they could also accept frequent flier miles from various airlines. I don't have any upcoming conference trips planned (except for the one that was supposed to be held in New Orleans next June, yeah right). So I called and transferred all my miles to the Red Cross.

As I told the lady on the other end, as we cried at each other, "I don't need to go anywhere right now, and I think... they do."

So: step one.

I used your link to send a donation to the Humane Society. If I can get paid for the edit job I just finished, I hope to donate more to both organizations. Good luck on your auctions!
