Buck Rogers, anyone?

Post by Kitt »

My Dad gave me an interesting piece of old comic art that I'm hoping someone on Anime-Beta might be able to point me in the right direction to research properly.

Here's a scan:

It's from my Dad's childhood (he's the "Ronnie" mentioned in the signature -- "Teddy" is his brother) and I believe the signature is Dick Calkins', the original creator, according to one website I found, or the original artist, according to a different website.

So, if anyone has any information about how to research old art from Buck Rogers, please, help me out! And, do you guys think I'd be okay posting it in my Rubberslug gallery? While there was a Buck Rogers cartoon, I think this image is from the comics.

Well, I don't know anything about Buck Rogers, but I think you'd definately be okay posting it in your RS gallery. I mean, it's original artwork, right?

Yes a very nice piece and due to it's history a valuable keepsake.

Richard (Dick) Calkins (1895-1962) was the 1st artist who worked on the Buck Rogers newspaper comic strip which debuted on Jan. 7th 1929.
Buck Rogers was taken from the original story in Amazing stories and was adapted to the strip which ran until 1967. It is considered the 1st Science Fiction comic strip and was later the inspiration for Flash Gordon and others.

Dick Calkins worked up until 1947 on the strip.

I would expect your drawing is worth around $150-200 if you ever tried to sell it which I would recommend that you not.
