Gun safety

Isn't "Gun Safety" an oxymoron ?

I have to admit I admire the technology behind guns because when firing a gun you are actually (hopefully) controlling a massive explosion in your hand. (Which is downright nuts when you think about it.)
But I don't think very high of the use.

To an extent, this is true. If a pistol or shotgun were to become jammed by having a round forced into the chamber and lodged with another round already in there and the slide was still somehow able to close and someone was stupid and/or unlucky enough to pull the trigger.............not good. But this almost never happens, especially with the way guns are designed today. (There's also an old saying - "Revolvers don't jam!")

I actually saw this video about 6 months ago, and I'm still just as appalled as when I first saw it. The pistol is a Glock 22 - .40 caliber (or short 10). Most pistols have a safety button or switch that when pressed won't allow the trigger to be pulled. The thing about a Glock is that the safety is actually part of the trigger itself. So if your lock & load (just like he did in front of these students), there's no way to prevent a discharge if the trigger is pulled, which is exactly what he did when he re-holstered. I'm glad he ended up shooting himself and not one of the kids. Idiot.

I am a gun owner, and I was just as disgusted at this guy as transmet. I got training to use these weapons not only from my father(Marine vet and gunmaker), but from a course at Camp Pendelton that lasted a weekend. Problem when dealing with an automatic is that people forget that when that slide goes forward, it chambers a round(if you have a magazine in the gun). He should have ejected the magazine, pulled back the slide, and checked the barrel. Like transmet, I'm glad he had sense enough too keep the barrel pointed away from the kids at least.

I wouldn't have brought the gun in the class loaded in the first place, cloud.

Agreed, I've received some defense training myself, and when I watched the video unfold I noticed how stupid it was that he 1. didn't remove the magazine BEFORE pulling the slide and 2. Didn't check the chamber and 3 of course that he accidentally pulled the trigger.

I don't really think he was shot though, I believe he hurt his hand from the slide action.

Why is he bringing a (real) gun the first place ?
Is he speaking in front of a group of people who never ever have seen a gun on tv ? Or have heard about it in history lessons ? Read a newspaper ? Played cowboy ? A group of people who do not understand the concept of a gun without a REAL example ?

He starts off talking about drugs. He doesn't bring a kilo or two of the finest Columbian in as an example does he ?

In most districts, cops are required to carry their weapon at all times while on duty.

That would have been my guess too.. but it still doesn't explain why he should be using a real weapon for demonstration purposes.

In my district, all secondary schools have a campus police officer that does carry a weapon. I know it can be hard to fathom for folks who are not from the states(it's hard to fathom for some folks here as well), but that's how things are these days. Recently, the officer at my school was assaulted by a parent and had his collarbone fractured in the process. It's crazy, because he is a really nice guy who is only trying to protect the kids
