Sorry I can't help with the soundtrack. But I can see (hear) why'd want it.
It had a very original feel to it.

The Doctor : … and then, just to finish off, I’m going to wipe every last stinking Dalek out of the sky !
Dalek : But you have no weapons ! No defenses ! No plan !
The Doctor : Yeah ! And doesn’t that scare you to death ?

For the official 15-track OST CD album it can be found online in several popular stores. My first port of call was CD-Japan and it's just over $24 there, similar to Nippon-Export which is more than you want to pay. Especially when EMS shipping is around $14.00 on top of that.
Ronin's suggestion of Amazon was good- they have it but at $28.99 it's expensive; the best bet are the Marketplace sellers that have it for under $15. Shipping would be cheap too since you're within the USA.
At Cine-East it's a more affordable $14.99 so check that out too.
I'm sure it'd be on Ebay too given time- the only one I've sen so far is over $30. Just look out for any bootlegs that may surface [unless you're happy with them].
Sorry but I have to stop now, I'm SOOO tempted to browse these sites more and must hold back all temptations to buy more movies. Argh, the dreaded 'Sale' sign too!... At least this gives you something to go on NSP.

The older Zatoichi didn't act the same way Beat did. He would act more "humble" around the boss mobs, and would eat and drink like it was his only meal in life. His antics were more humorous till he protected someone (or himself).
Beat said he didn't want to copy the older style of Zatoichi. He knew that everybody who loves Zatoichi wouldn't like his version so might as well go with a really different style. It worked, those who grew up on Zatoichi didn't recognize the new age Zatoichi.
As an actor and director, he did a great job with the movie. Really well written script and directing.

Glad to hear you plumped for the CD NSP, I'm sure you'll enjoy it!
Like you Yoshito, I'm a fan of the original Zatoichi, in fact he and his [real life] brother, Tomisaburo Wakayama, are sitting on my shelf; all be it in toy form ^__^
What I loved about Katsu's perfomance was that he was so mellow, humble and amusing yet confident and strong. He's my fave Chambara Eiga character for those reasons.
You have to give the guy credit- for a blind man he knew what was going on around him and his anticipation of things happening around him and his good judge of character is amazing. I know it's only a film, but it struck a chord with me anyway.
Kitano's perfromances are always honest and believeable but I didn't feel he had the right pressence to represent Zatoichi. Probably because I loved the original incarnation so much I don't know, perhaps I can't shake the cold Yakuza stereotype?

Out of the gloom a voice said unto me;
"Smile and be happy, things could be worse".
So I smiled and was happy
and behold;
things did get worse...

things did get worse...
