How do you get Word 2003 to not load that damn PDF toolbar?!

Post by soda »

Every friggin time I open Word, it automatically displays the PDF toolbar. I know it's a simple thing to just go up and turn it off but I want to permanently turn it off. Anyone know how to do this?

That is a generalization.

I have an older version of Word, but . . . does yours have View, Toolbars? There should be checks next to those that are showing. Uncheck the PDF one - that should be permanent (as opposed to right-clicking the offending toolbar to turn it off once).

Let's hear it: a newer version of Word than I have doesn't work that way! :P

I know what you're talking about and that's what I do. But it's never permanent. I wonder if it's because I'm working with Word from a server and I don't have authority to make changes to the Normal.dot template.

And while we're on the subject, don't you hate it when you insert text into a paragraph and all of a sudden its a totally different font and red or something like that? Or a simple deletion of a line somehow alters the format of the paragraph font and color? Corel Wordperfect was much more user friendly in that you could actually use this thing called reveal codes and see why stuff like that was happening and go in a delete the problem. Not with Word. I cannot see or delete those hidden codes that turn things bold or red. Drives me nuts!

Quite likely it's because you can't make changes to normal.dot...

And since we're on the subject of irritating things with MS Word.. one thing I really hate is the auto-formatting.. even though I turn it off, it still creeps in there and messes up my documents anyway! grrr... :P

Just out of curiousity soda, when you go to the top and click "Tools" and then go down and click "Customize" which boxes are checked under "Toolbars"? ("Standard", "Formatting", and "Menu Bar" are the defaults.)

I've got nothing against computers helping out, except when they do it uninvited.

Each time I physically push the off-button on my printer, my computer thinks it is necessary to warn me twice about the fact it has no connection with the printer. :x

Same thing with those early voice-computer in cars:
"The door is open ! The door is open !"
I KNOW THE DOOR IS OPEN, YOU WHINY SILLICON PIECE OF SH!T ! I'M TRYING TO GET INTO THE CAR !!!!!!

The Doctor : … and then, just to finish off, I’m going to wipe every last stinking Dalek out of the sky !
Dalek : But you have no weapons ! No defenses ! No plan !
The Doctor : Yeah ! And doesn’t that scare you to death ?

transmet: the standard, menu bar and PDF maker toolbars are checked. I've even deleted the PDF toolbar and it shows back up. I can't get ride of it... It's teasing me. I'm pretty certain that it's because I can't save the Normal.dot though so I'm okay with that. When I work with my Word on my computer, it doesn't show up because I've made the change.

IGWT: I agree... as long as the computer automatically does what I want it to do then I'm okay with that, but why it seems to think I want my font to be different and in red makes me wonder.

That could be quite a while. Was it plugged in?

Of course I could be just me.

Something that really pisses me off is when Google can't find what you are looking for and then goes all condescending on you : Did you mean :"

(I'm certain it's just me :D )

From Normal.dot Template—Explained:

"Note! If you can't (customize Normal.dot), check with your system admin, as the company may have locked the normal.dot template so you can't make these types of changes. However, you can get around this problem by saving a copy of the Normal.dot to your own system (assuming it is locked on a network drive). Then click Tools/Options/File Locations and reset the path to your Normal.dot from the network path to your own PC path. This will cause Word to use your new default location for the Normal.dot and not the previously defined network location."

Word is the tool of the :dgrin

Especially when you're up against a deadline.

Hey ... in a similar vein. It drives me bonkers that I have to reset my toolbars EVERY time I reboot. (Yes, she says shamefully, I still use IE). I'm jealous of screen real estate and I don't need five lines of helpful buttons to find my way around, thanks. So every blessed time I get to turn off the selected text (you think I need a prompt for a back arrow? :puzzled ) and pull the few buttons and drop downs onto the same line as the address. That's all I want and all I need.

"Saving your settings..."

Bull!! Like cow you're saving my settings!

So. The last time I tried to find a solution for this I ended up needing to restore my system to "factory-new" condition, which should tell you how technically savvy I am.

Anyone have a clue they could point me toward?
