Collect fan cels?

Post by hyelakingsfan »

How many of you collect fan cels or not? Or have you ever thought about it?

I dont collect fan cels because i prefer original art, but i have thought about it. There are some really great ones out there that look like the originals and it made me think....do i want it or not? Hmmm....

There are 2 fan cels in my gallery - one belonging to me, the other to my hubby 4_Degree. Both are fan cels of actual production cels on our wishlist... perhaps one day they shall be replaced - until then.. they'll do! :)

At this time I have 1 fancel in my gallery. It was one that caught my eye on YJ. I would love to comission a fancel or two but finding a food artist that is still taking orders is like hen's teeth.

So for now it's just the one. Does that count as "collecting"?

I wanted to buy one before but I could not get it :(

Also I thought that I would make it by myself but I also found out that it is expensive.... /sob

So if I have a chance I would like to have one :)

Personally a 'no' for me, I have no interest in them at all as I prefer original production art. Owning a fancel is nearlly as good as printing out a picture from the net for me...doesn't mean other people can't enjoy them though! :)

I have two in my collection: one that I did and one that Baakay did. That's it.

I thought about fancels briefly when I realized I was probably never going to own a quality Sentimental Journey background character cel. But after thinking about it I realized that it would be too difficult to capture how the characters look. So I gave up on the idea.

If I saw another decent Senti fan cel or sketch on Yahoo Japan, I'd be open to the idea. But I wouldn't want to pay that much for it.

I bought one on a whim for a very cheap price. :^^: Besides the fact that they aren't production art, that seems to be a huge problem with fan cels. If you comission one for big bucks, chances are that it won't be of value to anyone besides you. So, no return on your investment. I wouldn't get one commissioned unless it was to replace a missing layer or maybe a background. I would never seriously collect them like I do production cels, though.

The reason I don't collect fan art is that the nostalgia for me collecting is that I own part of an anime. In my mind it's the difference between owning the Mona Lisa and having a Mona Lisa made for you in your friend's garage.

I never thought I would collect fan art when I started cel collecting. I had comments like most non-collectors like NSP. However, as the artwork became CG and more competition and higher prices, I rethought things. There are some wonderful artists out there. So if I like it, I buy it. Period! :)

I specifically collect fan cels that are made from scenes of my fanfics - because they can't possibly exist as real cels. I think I find this just as satisfying if not mroe so than collecting real cels. And it's less expensive. I'm not as much interested in fan cels made from actually screen caps because they're too easy to confuse with the real thing.

Couldn't have said it better.

I have a few fancels. I bought a couple of them even though I was not sure if they were real or not b/c I was new to collecting, a vague translation or some other circumstance. I bought them because I liked them. I have no intention of getting rid of them, so resale value is not a concern. I recently commissioned my last one b/c sketches from Gundam Seed Destiny are so expensive I didn't think I would ever get any....now I have an Athrun sketch. Oh well, I still like the fancel, too.

However, I don't consider myself an active collector of fancels and have limits as to how much I will spend.

I have a couple fan cels. I don't look at collecting them like I look at collecting production cels - I think of them as artworks unto themselves, much like the science fiction art I collect. This is why I want them signed, among other reasons.

I would only get ones that I KNOW I won't ever get or ones from CG animes because what rilezu may be out there most likely it's not one that you're DYING for. I did purchase one fancel off YJ and then the real thing showed up about a year after. Funny thing is, I think the fancel was much clearer and looked better than the original yet if I had my choice I would've purchased the real thing over the hand-drawn one.

My cat Seeley is a Sailor Moon fan, too!

I didn't anticipate on having a black female cat and a white male cat or I would have named them Luna and Artemis... oh well.
