How often do you wear cotton gloves?

I never used gloves for two or three years (only clean hands). But then a few years ago I had great difficulty removing a couple of my fingerprints from a couple of cels. In fact I was never able to completely remove them. So after that happened I usually handle cels with kleenex since I'd hate for that to happen again when it can be so easily avoided.
The adhesive that comes on some cel bags is a real annoyance when you're trying to handle the cel properly.

I think I'll be crucified if I give an honest answer to this question... and it's particularly sad coming from an archivist-in-training who really DOES know better.
Go ahead, Kymaera. Lick those Mei-King cels. You know you want to.

Dunno whether you were referring to the practice of wearing gloves or Kymaera's licking of celssoda wrote:That's just weird.

But yes, it actually is standard practice for conservationists to wear cotton gloves to handle anything valuable. Body oils, don'tcha know. It's especially true for anything made of delicate fibers (very old textiles, paper, what have you) because the last thing you want to do is have your body chemistry set off some kind of irreversible reaction.
Kaboom!

Not that I do that myself, you know

Nope ... I don't wear gloves when handling the cels. Like some others have said, I wash my hands very thoroughly before handling cels or sketches, and only handle them by the extreme edges, the same as I would handle a photograph.
Generally, the cel is only out of its bag when I first get it. I take it out, pair it with a background, scan it, and, generally, put it in a new bag. Then, it goes into the book, and, normally, doesn't come out of the bag again.
But ... with that said, I have debated over investing in a pair of gloves, as I have gotten cels that have fingerprints on them (not mine, but from previous owners/handlers ... I presume
), and I have had a hard time removing them (the fingerprints, that is ... not the previous owners ... altho ... some owners are harder to separate from cels than others.
)

Nope, that's the issue for paper and textiles (ya wise guy, yasoda wrote:So the body oils get into the very permeable and porous celluloid?

My own personal experience has been that rubbing alcohol very VERY carefully applied -- but not on the paint, of course -- will take most of them off. I think I got that tip from Sensei, but I'm not sure. At any rate, it works pretty well and, well, fingerprints don't bother me much. (what I wish I had a cure for is the white spotting you get on older cels...)
Just pointing out that it's not as weird as you might think
