Google Desktop App

Post by lys »

For the longest time I was not a fan adding anything that would take up space on my precious precious desktop but after the constant praise of the new Spotlight app on MacOSX from my Apple buddies I had to give google desktop a try.

I wasn't extremely optimistic about installing it but I am glad I did. When I do not need my entire desktop (every inch counts when using some applications) this thing just amazing - especially when just browsing the web. One of the coolest things is that it has a built in slideshow that will show images from whatever directory(ies) you tell it to. Right now for example is it going through my cel directories. It also is pretty customizable + easy to hide when you don't need it.

Of course its main purpose is to index everything on your hard drive so you can search for names and images on the fly.

Anyway I know this is wierd to post on a cel collectors forum but I thought it just might interest a couple of you to try it out. It is not often that I am impressed with new applications.

Here is an example of it running on my desktop:

I guess it would help giving the URL of the app:

Interesting... what are you running that's giving you the Windows Longhorn-like interface (start bar changes and such)? WindowBlinds? StyleXP? I'm just curious when I see someone not on a comp forum with a non-standard desktop

It is the VistaXP skin from http://studiotwentyeight.com. They have both a WB + MSstyles available but this one is the latter.

I believe it was based on the most recent build of Windows Vista. I was looking around for themes with a black taskbar and since this is what Windows is going to look like next year - I thought I would switch.

I used StyleXP just to install it (it doesn't run otherwise) along with one of those "fixed" uxtheme.dlls you need to install any non-standard windows theme from Neowin.net:

Like I said in the post above I don't normally like things that take up system resources.

Yup - I hear that.. I don't like using things like StyleXP because they typically take up my resources, but I was just curious. Eventually I may switch to something to make my desktop look a bit more 'modernized' but... it's not my first priority. ^_^

Whose first priority is it?

The Three Laws of Robotics:
1. A robot may not injure a human being, or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
2. A robot must obey the orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.
3. A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.
