"Like the wind crying endlessly through the universe, Time carries away the names and the deeds of conquerors and commoners alike. And all that we are, all that remains, is in the memories of those who cared we came this way for a brief moment." Harlan Ellison

I've been following this for a few days now and it makes me ill to think about it. Already game hackers are using the hidden files to cheat on popular online games. So you know other uses will follow.
The root files are also destructive. There are documented cases where someone erased the root file and it destroyed their computer out of self defense.
EDIT: NM they said that in the article.
This is very scary stuff.

This kind of garbage makes me sick just thinking about it. I can understand that they're trying to thwart music pirates but they're going about it the wrong way. As if the fact that most of the P2P networks for sharing music (Grokster and WinMX come to mind since both have shut down) have shut down or are in the process because of fairly recently won court cases wasn't enough - they're spying on us now too.

The root files have now been exploited. It is officially a security concern now:

Conspiracy
The only thing scarier than finding out about something like this is imagining the possibilities.
If Sony in theory has such capabilities, what's to say there aren't corporations that haven't already done it?
At this very moment, we could totally be in the control of something else. Sounds paranoid, but it could be true. (I'm expecting this site to be shut down any second to prevent the truth from leaking!)

Re: Conspiracy
Geez, BMB, why'd you have to go and do that? Here we were, just a group of people complacently accepting Sony mind-control and using Beta as a means of escape, and you have to go and rock the boat.Blackmegabyte wrote:At this very moment, we could totally be in the control of something else. (I'm kidding, in case you can't tell. I don't want to drive you away so soon after joining. Get used to random spurts of sarcasm.

Yes it sounds like it to me too, klet.

The Three Laws of Robotics:
1. A robot may not injure a human being, or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
2. A robot must obey the orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.
3. A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.
-I, Robot (Asimov)
