Mahoromatic was the only ending that made me want to fly to Japan and egg the Gainax building

"Like the wind crying endlessly through the universe, Time carries away the names and the deeds of conquerors and commoners alike. And all that we are, all that remains, is in the memories of those who cared we came this way for a brief moment." Harlan Ellison

Going back to my classics, having some great arcs during the series, the last one of Space Adventure Cobra just didn't cut it.

The Doctor : … and then, just to finish off, I’m going to wipe every last stinking Dalek out of the sky !
Dalek : But you have no weapons ! No defenses ! No plan !
The Doctor : Yeah ! And doesn’t that scare you to death ?

Oh what a rich vein to mine! Although many jewels have already been taken:
Akira:
Escaflowne:
Evangelion:
Rurouni Kenshin:
But the winner and still champion is Mighty Space Miners. Watch it and see if you don’t agree.
Akira:
Oh what the h**l, just blow everything up. |
Our love is all encompassing, eternal, transcendent. Bye-bye, good luck rebuilding your country, I’m off to take my Algebra test now. |
Who cares about the Apocalypse; I’ve learned to like myself. |
Not for nothing does the Japanese pronunciation of Feng Shui rhyme with phooey. |

Gilgamesh
Hi,
I think Gilgamesh had the worst ending. It depressed me for 2 days after I watched it. Then comes Wolf's Rain, Tokyo Underground, and Betterman.
I definitely think that an ending can make or break a series. Berserk had an really weird ending, but at least there are rumors that a second season might still be made so there is hope that the ending will make sense.

I recently finished the Project ARMS series. The "Second Chapter" was good but the ending episode was very bad.
90% of this episode was clip shots, I was fast forwarding through it cursing under my breath. I still love the artwork from the series. They just pissed me off with the ending. Unlike Berserk, where I was left wanting more shows, I wanted ONE less show from ARMS.

Oh yeah, I remember why I bypassed this thread 10 months ago. It was because of all the Akira haters here
It's OK, we have have different opinions, I must be in the minority that thought the ending was very inventive and thought-provoking. However I agree that a knowledge of the manga is important in understanding what it's all about.
Anyway, worst endings in anime... the Ghost in the Shell movie. It ended very abruptly as if another few scenes should follow. In fact, they do this in most anime, particularly in series because they always hope to get funding for a follow-up series
However they don't aften achieve the objective of leaving the audience wanting more. The reaction is usually "what the heck was THAT?, why didn't she...? or how did he...?"

My friends and I always joked that something like this happened at the studio:
"Alright folks, 'Rurouni Kenshin' is done. Everyone pack up your pencils and go home...EXCEPT you! Yeah, you. You're gonna stay behind and animate the final episode. Everyone else... se ya round."
Because seriously, the last episode looked like it was made out of desperation, as if one poor bastard was stuck with the task of "wrapping up RK". There is so much live-action footage and "long-holds" thrown in there just to eat up the minutes. My favorite example of a "long hold" would be when Kenshin and Karou enter that inn. We see the exterior shot of the inn, with them entering the front door. Then the scene stays on that stupid exterior shot for about a minute or so, and then we see a light click on in one of the windows. Apparently, no one could be bothered to maybe..I dunno...cut indoors and animate them at least walking up the stairs to the room or something?
Aside from that "final episode", the majority of the episodes that ran from post-Kyoto arc to the end were pretty much junk. The "Christian Arc" had it's moments, but for the most part was laughable. For the other filler episodes, some of the light-hearted ones were cute, but that's it.
As for other anime endings:
Evangelion. Seems to have the popular vote..but I couldn't agree more. Watching it is like being audience to the inner turmoils and psychological dramas of the writers and directors. It's a giant couch-fest.
As for "Wolf's Rain", it's like they try to grind you into despair, and then set you up with an ending that doesn't make very much sense. My bigger gripe, though, is 4- something wasted episodes of flashbacks. That is just overkill as far as "biding time" goes for production.
