What's the best Plastation 1 game? Advice needed for a gift

Post by hyaku1 »

Okay, I'm trying to figure out what game to get for my sister (we have a Playstation 1). She's turning 15. She doesn't like Sports games, racing games, or fighting games (I think), or scary games like Resident Evil ( I love them though).
Games she has really liked in the past: Dragoon, Final Fantasy 7, Harvest Moon, Spyro, Thousand Arms . . . I don't know what else.
Anyway, any advice greatly apreciated! I'm going to work now but I'll check here when I get back.

Yeah okay, Don't think too hard.

I used to really like Sheep, Dog and Wolf.

Its based on the Wiley Coyote and Sam the Sheepdog cartoons, you have to work out how to get the sheep away from the flock without Sam noticing.
It usually involves ordering various stupid gadgets from Acme.

Final Fantasy VIII + IX are great as well as Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (its not really scary at all) and Metal Gear Solid.

If she likes FFVII, she'll love FFVIII too...guaranteed :)

That depends.. I really hated the card game aspect of FFVIII. It was a huge turn off.. also found the story a little boring.

On the other hand FFVII was great.

How about Chrono Cross? The art is gorgeous and its a role playing game.
I agree with Uende about Tomb Raider.

Is it possible to upgrade to a PS2?

Sounds like she likes RPGs, which so do I. Legend of Dragoon is one of my favorites. Some games she would probably like are:

- Final Fantasy IX
- Chrono Cross

Honestly, I wouldn't get her FFVIII.

der?! :puzzled Sorry, you'll have to forgive me.. I got to the train part of the game and then quit. X| Ignored the card game, til I realized you kind of had to play it, or the game was a lot harder.. so I never bothered to continue with it. Maybe one day I'll pick it back up to play.

I don't know if she likes music/dance games, but Parappa the Rapper is a lot of fun. It requires a little more coordination than most RPGs with button pushing, but it's easy to pick up and play. Also, almost everyone in my family enjoyed playing Bust a Groove 1 and 2, which is a dance game series a lot like Parappa in terms of gameplay. For fun RPGs, I also love FFVIII and FFIX. I also recommend Lunar: Silver Star Story, Suikoden I and Suikoden II (which I haven't played but have heard great things about. I'd love to play, but it's almost impossible to GET a copy for less than $100 :P), and of course Wild Arms and Wild Arms: 2nd Ignition. Fun games. Another one of my favorite PS1 RPGs is Xenogears. It's got a great story and interesting characters, but it's a little mature (there's a little nudity and little pixel characters in BED together! And the Soylent System scene is .... disturbing) and the 2nd disc is a little bit of a letdown. I think it depends on what you think is appropriate for her. If she likes oldschool, you can also get the older FF games and Chrono Trigger for PS1. Because Chrono Trigger is, of course, the greatest game EVER created. :D

Hector the Collector loved these things with all his soul,
Loved them more than shining diamonds, loved them more than glistenin' gold.
Hector called to all the people,"Come and share my treasure trunk!"
And all the silly sightless people came and looked...and called it junk.

You don't have to play the card game in VIII--though I did, and I loved it! By this time, I probably suck at it, though. X| It's been a while since I picked it up--I did get all of the cards, though. From what I remember, the only aspect of the card game that transfers into regular play is that you can make items from the cards. I never did, though, and I still got all of the ultimate weapons, so there is a way to play without ever playing the card game. I'd be surprised if I remember how, though. :hurt: I think it involves stealing rare items from monsters.

I think that there is a point where you have to play the card game in IX, though. BTW, I love Zidane!

Legend of Dragoon had such cheesy voice acting in the end. :D I still love the game, but watching the ending always makes me laugh. I guess I'm just twisted. :dhmm

Everything that I've played has been suggested, but there are others sitting in my "to play" pile that she might like based on what she's played. Star Ocean, Chrono Cross, Chrono Trigger, and Xenogears (though I understand that this one has a lot of religious references and has been seen as somewhat anti-religious, but you've got to understand the cultural differences, too) to name a few.

You know, I think my "to play" pile is almost as daunting as some of you guys' "to scan" piles. :D

I'd consider Vagrant Story, It's my favorite game of all times. Its basically an rpg with some puzzles.
