Life is so bizarre

Post by Baakay »

So. Several days ago I was feeling woeful and self-piteous, and all of that. Old, fat, dull, blah, blah.

There's just nothing like a trip away from home -- even if it's just an overnighter -- to slap you upside the head and put things in perspective.

1) Keynote speakers who were *gasp* MODERATES!! I mean... have you any idea how wonderfully life-affirming it is to realize that no, you in fact are NOT the only person who shares the love of debate and open ideas and thoughts??! 8O My field (librarianship) is all about making a safe place to house and think about ideas, freely. We have some ultra right-wingers and some ultra left-wingers in the mix, but most of us are pretty firmly planted right in the middle, and equally dismayed about the name-flinging closed-mindedness that's been going on, on both "sides of the aisle" so to speak.

It gets to be downright distressing when you speak what used to be considered basic common sense and get labelled as an evil being for it. I now feel renewed, knowing that I'm not crazy! Well, ok, I'm crazy but it's not because of my nice vanilla social viewpoints. (or,. at least there are a whopping big bunch of us on that particular crazy bus).

2) I am NOT FAT!! There is nothing in this world quite as likely to make you feel skinny as a rail, in spite of baby pads that never went away, as going to a library conference. Wow. Most of us in the field are in the 40-55 age range, or older (thank whatever, there is a new wave of younger people coming into the profession...I was beginning to really worry). And all of us have our degrees of salt in the hair, and depending on how sedentary the job and the degree of other physical ailments going on, are ... well... BIG.

To put it bluntly, some of these girls would make two of me. :jaw Librarians, in the money-saving Giant Economy Size.

And to be fair, a couple of my favorites in the family-pack category can dance circles around me in the productivity department. I'm not picking on size, just realizing what a DORK I am to be worrying so much about it!

So. Now Uende and Aernath and Ashura and Kittens and Shellie and *breathe Kay* all the other people who have been telling me what a foolish thing it is for me to be down about my extra padding -- you may slap me about sharply. I actually had to go see myself sitting in rooms of my peers to realize how right you are... we're all of various sizes, shapes, degrees of decreptitude and/or beauty, and we're all great in spite of it.

Spank away :-)

(but I do feel much better! I highly recommend a good night's sleep in a quiet room to everyone!)

And to add to Uende's nice hug, I'll blow ya a kiss all the way from Ohio!! /kis

So glad you had a chance to jump-start your librarian batteries at your conference AND get the benefit of a quiet night's sleep! Aaaaahh, heavenly! (says the other mom with 2 young-ish and wild-ish children! ;)) I'm glad you were finally able to focus on the good parts of you, cuz like the rest of us have known all along, (to borrow a Marthaism) it's all good! :)

In the immortal words of Bobby McFerrin, don't worry be happy!

In every life you have some trouble but when you worry you make it double---- don't worry, be happy....!

Thanks for sharing your thoughts B, keep on keepin' on!

I'm glad you got enough courage to sort your problems out and deal with them so professionally. Just know that you are most definatley NOT alone in whatever you endure... there is always atleast one other person who's going through the same things as you are! Just keep in mind that everybody's different and the things that make us different gives us character and strength. You are a very strong person to want to tackle your issues! So good luck to you and whatever comes your way! :)

My cat Seeley is a Sailor Moon fan, too!

I didn't anticipate on having a black female cat and a white male cat or I would have named them Luna and Artemis... oh well.

Altough I fully understand the underlying meaning of the words, I never liked that particular advice.

I feel it is necessary to worry in order to be(come) happy.

I see worrying as a form a recalibrating your life.
Step one : You worry about something.

Step two : You check if the thing worry about needs to be altered. If the answer is "no", go to stp four. If the answer is "yes", go to step three.

Step three : (Try to) take measures which will change the situation so yo don't need to worry about it.

Step four : become happy with the situation.

Step five : rince and repeat in due time.

In my eyes, it are the people who don't worry who will become unhappy very soon.

ps: i tend to worry too much. but that's something else alltogheter ;)

There's nothing for it, bend over missy whilst I don THE glove :whip

Seriously, I know what you mean Kay. No-one looks like the air-brushed 15 year-olds we see in magazines and on billboards, that's really quite laughable.
It's sometimes helpful to realise that there are MILLIONS of people in the world in a worse-off position than ourselves, it's all a state of mind and how you get on with things. I'm glad to hear that your recent gathering reminded you of that to an extent.

Well, that's 'cuz you haven't seen my picture. :crackup :rollin :crazy

*wipes tears from her eyes* Ah, I kill me. :P

In my age group, and considering where I live and what uni I'm attending (we're a famous party school--there's even a drive-through liquor store down the street from my dorm  ) sometimes looking at the other girls with their bleached hair and smaller bodies can be depressing. Most of the time, though, it's amusing. Most of them have love handles. Love handles which are rather prominently displayed by their choice of dress. :roll /heh

I'm glad you got some much deserved peace and quiet. It really gives you a new perspective on life when you're fully rested. :friends:
