Before everyone gets their undies in a bind, they should consider that this is most likely a hoax. These e-mails go out to people just to get their jolly's in generating responses like what you see in this post. People also create these emails because they don't like Catholics (I'm guessing that's who they're proposing this 'actual' letter came from) and want to fuel the fire. Just a thought. :|

Uh... yeah.. please tell me this is a joke. :puzzled
That's just... retarded. :?

Was this an actual physical newsletter that was sent out or was it an email? "St. Mary's Catholic Church" just sounds like such a... generic name. :? (Although, heaven knows, there's probably a "St. Mary's Catholic Church" somewhere out there.)

....

.....

:? :? :?

Maybe this is a tiresome thread. I found/find it funny. I am Catholic and DO get very hurt when people get up in my face about it (just like I get hurt when people get up in my face about using a font other than Arial for my professional e-mails - it's not a crime to want to use something more flashy!). I am not goth, though I know I have the tendencies and always have. It's just the way I am - convinced I was born about one hundred years too late. This isn't in my face. It's too silly for that.

Anyhoo, "the church" has been around for so long. It can hold up to a little ribbing. :)

Well, I wouldn't be surprised if 1/3 of it was though. I went with my friend to his Penescotal (I hope I spelled that right) and after my 3rd visit, I was given a suggestion list of do's and don'ts.

no makeup (harlets or whores wore it... something to that affect)

Womens hair should be placed in an updo (I'm not kidding about this, cause I was like what?!?, they even had classes to teach you about putting your hair up correctly)

No TV (newspaper were allowed)

Women only wore dresses.

There were other things, but I remembered those because it affected me. They had church twice a week. I went 6 times (three weeks) for the sake of my friend who wanted to save me. I actually called him to confirm this before posting *about the stuff above*. I'm not saying anything mean, but you'd be surprised about the do's and don't of different churches. My friend and his family finally left that church because there were things that they didn't agree with. They were there for almost 6 years so they did try. I only went along because I thought it was sweet of him that he didn't want me to burn in hell. Plus we had known each other for 9 years and never bugged me to until then. Out of respect, I went.

He's still one of my best friends. One of THE Nicest Guy that I know. :)

Ok...

How about we pick on Philosophy!! :D (which is identified as one of the other dangerous cults).

The thing that's really funny about that list is not that it's identified with "Saint Mary's Catholic Church" (of which there are thousands across the country). It could be attributed to the Baptists or Lutherans or 7th-Day Adventists or anyone else. For that matter, change "goth" to "comics" and it could be attributed to the folks who got the Comics Code of Approval passed way back when.

Nope, it's not the religion part of it that's so funny, it's the sheer nonsensical lack of understanding of a cultural trend AND the utter hyperbole of the overstatement (ooo talk about poor constructions! what the hey I'm going to leave it). It's just so out there that it can't possibly be for real.

It's unfortunate that it's pushed someone's sore spot. Apologies for that... but I still think it's darn hilarious in a sick sort of way.

... although it does kind of remind me of the letters to the editor in our local paper some days...

MM: the first thing I did was do a search at snopes.com and I couldn't find anything. But even though it's not in there, I've not responded until now because I too think it's an urban legend yet to be reported/documented.

Regardless, it's kinda funny but to the point of nonsense because of some of the things on that list. I don't truly think there are hoards of religious people out there that actually think this way. There maybe a few and I think that is who should keep in mind when reading this letter. It's poking fun at the few extremists within the religion.
