25 years have passed

Post by JWR »

Long , long time ago.I can still remember

how that music used to make me smile.

And I knew if I had my chance

that I could make those people dance

and maybe they'd be happy for a while.

But Febuary made me shiver

with every paper I delivered

bad new on the doorstep

I couldn't take one more step.

I can't remember if I cryed

when I read about his widowed bride

Something touched me deep inside

The day the music died. (American Pie , Don Mclean)

25 years have passed since Mark David Chapman took from this world John Lennon.
I still remember hearing the news break on the radio making the annoucement. It's 25 years and the shock is still there.
"Like the wind crying endlessly through the universe, Time carries away the names and the deeds of conquerors and commoners alike. And all that we are, all that remains, is in the memories of those who cared we came this way for a brief moment." Harlan Ellison

Although I was about three when that happened, I can still relate to the shock of the situation. I had that same feeling when Kurt Cobain died eleven years ago. The good die young, unfortunately. Such a tragedy.

The odd thing is, it's impossible to imagine them as becoming old. I cannot picture an old John Lennon or Jimi Hendrix.

^ I do not remember anything of it either.

And like Blueheaven said; some people you just can't picture old and withering away.

I can't forget when that happened. I was on vacation on Oahu with my dad visiting my relatives when I heard the news over the car radio. I couldn't believe what I heard. The next day a huge John Lennon article was on the front page of the Honolulu Star-Bulletin. :(

I think I still have that front page saved somewhere.

For the sake of my failing memory...wasn't "Just Starting Over" popular on the radio at the time of his death? Or was it popular a couple months before? They played it a LOT of times after his death (and there were many radio dedications asking for it). Everytime I hear that song all I can do is think back on sad events relating to memories from that time period. It's all so sad. :bawl

Yep.

It's one of those events like "where were you when JFK was shot" (I was in the 2nd grade and scared out of my mind because the adults were all so frightened).

Or... where were you when Martin Luther King was shot, or Bobby Kennedy was shot. (8th grade, a little wiser and still scared out of my mind by the violence).

I can't BELIEVE it's been 25 years!! wow. It was during that 3-month period "off for behavior" that Nate and I had; I was living in Hampton Beach, NH and selling cheap shoes in Portsmouth :P Nice, nice little apartment.

But it sure didn't seem nice that day.

I sat there by my lonesome in the apt. and cried for hours.

Unfortunately, the world hasn't gotten any nicer in the last 25 years.
Imagine.
