Count me amoung the confused...weird happenings

Post by Cosmic Skiv »

OK OK what's going on??? First I turn my computer on and I've lost the DVD-Rom, then I lose Drive E and NOW I've lost the floppy drive......I have tried system restore 5 times and they all reappear for between 3 and 5 minutes and then off they go again on their walk abouts.

I have checked; all the drivers are there, there is no virus, worm or whatever and I haven't deleted anything I shouldn't have, and the only recent addition is a new mouse so i'm stumped.

So if anyone has any Ideas I could sure use 'em.... otherwise this thing is gonna get launched through the nearest window..... /wah

Very wierd. Can't say that I have seen drive dissappear mid-operation but I guess anything can happen.

If you are using windows xp, you can access your disk management tools by going to:

start->run->type in "compmgmt.msc"

When Computer Management comes up click on 'Disk Management' on the left. That basically is used to show the properties of the disks it sees.

If that was happening to me I'd start to get a little worried because it doesn't sound like you've done anything to bring this on.
Computers can have a 'funny five minutes' from time to time when too much is going on and the processor can't cope. After closing everything down and rebooting that usually solves the problem, but if that's not happening for you I'd suggest one thing- clean reinstall.

I'm in the process of sorting out my new hard drive and will be installing everything from scratch. Haven't got round to it yet because of other jobs.

Dawn, if you have the Operating System disc that came with your computer, plus raw backups of your software, go for the complete reinstall. Format your hard drive then start loading everything back on.
Before wiping it, remember to back up your files, emails and bookmarks/favourites first!

Feel free to email me if you want some advice, I won't be on Messenger for a while.

Hope this problem can be overcome OK, I feel your frustration!

I would do as Krafty suggested - a complete format and re-install... if you do that and the problem persists, I'd be worried.

Sorry for the tardyness of my reply to your suggestions unfortunately a complete reboot can't be done unless you can figure out how to get the disc in when the computer said there's no drive to put it in. :D

I even tried updating the driver, I got the messege 'new hardwear found' then it vanished again....Sooo I'm going out at the weekend, buy an external drive,(one that doesn't get it's power from the computer) disable the one I've got and see how that goes.. The DVD drive I'm not too bothered about that comes and goes when it feels like it.

Krafty, I checked the events log and it says the drive was removed without preperation....but I can assure you I didn't remove anything....then I spotted a letter on cnet another person has had the same thing happen to him.....So careful guys it could happen to you..and there's no warning...you just switch the computer on and the drives are not there...

*Gah*, sorry to hear it's still giving you grief, Dawn. I don't think that having a second hard drive would solve the problem- unless you wish to copy your large files over to this, then format your old drive.
I still think thaink that formatting your faulty drive is the best thing to do. If you can get into your desktop OK, open 'My Computer' then where you see the icon for "Local Disk (C:)" just reight-click it then move down to "Format".

This erases everything on that disk and should get rid of the problem you were having.
The only bad thing is that you will need to reinstall everything again from scratch, your operating system, programes etc. However you shouldn't need to install drivers for the CD-ROM drive(s) because the OS has generic drivers that work with these OK.

If you're unable to use your CD-ROM drive to burn your files onto CD I understand why you'd want another hard disk to back up your info. I'm sure hubby will stump the bill if it means you get this solved ;)

I would be concerned that if you were to back up your entire hard disk by means of mirroring the info onto this new disk, you will also be copying over the main problem too...

NOTE: When you format your drive, that doesn't mean to have to loose all your emails and settings, WinXP has the neat 'Files & Settings Transfer Wizard' in the 'Accessories' folder which can save your emails, display settings etc and various files of your choosing.
I'd recommend running this wizard from the WinXP CD itself. If you insert the CD, click 'Additional Tasks' and you'll find it there. This has been successful for me, moreso than the Wizard on my actual HD.
Out of the gloom a voice said unto me;
"Smile and be happy, things could be worse".
So I smiled and was happy
and behold;
things did get worse...

=P Was going to suggest this too, but was beaten to the punch.

Most likely it isn't that, but you can never tell... Try reseating all the cables (take them all out, out of the case then put them back in) before you go and buy a drive. I would suggest swapping out cables as well, if you have any spares. Might just be a bad one that was waiting for an opportune moment to fail.

Once again Thank you for the Ideas.... Have checked all the cables and they are all ok and seated correctly.....

I've checked the disk managment and it tells me I've a healthy system, and the device manager says there is only a Floppy Drive present...

The thing is the computer works a treat. Everything else works as it should. ( Even the wireless internet connection is working better than it ever has)

It's not the Hard drive I'm going to replace it's the CDR re-writer. So I should only have to install the software to make that work... But before I do I could have a chat with the 'experts' at one particular chain of shops...

(And yes you are right Krafty Hubby will foot the bill :D )
