Trick or Treat ...

Post by tex-chan »

OK ... this is a pretty stupid question, I know ... but ....

do people trick-or-treat in Japan? Or, is that solely a US-based tradition?

This is for a fanfic I'm writing, by the way. So, although it sounds like a totally random question, it's not.

...

Well, OK, it is, but there's a method to my madness. Um ... sort of. :D

I can't speak for Japan but when it comes down to mainland western Europe, trick or treating is very slowly growing these last couple of years, but only due to the commercial boost of Halloween in these areas.

The Doctor : … and then, just to finish off, I’m going to wipe every last stinking Dalek out of the sky !
Dalek : But you have no weapons ! No defenses ! No plan !
The Doctor : Yeah ! And doesn’t that scare you to death ?

There was a halloween parade in Tokyo (forgot what part), but no trickortreaters in my area. Im sure there were small groups of in those closed communities, but its not mainstream yet.

Cool. This helps a lot, actually. Thanks for the really fast responses, you guys. I'm using the reference as a descriptive ... so, as long as someone, somewhere in Japan, trick-or-treats, I think it'll still work. :)

And, by the way, I just finished my fic ... well, the rough draft of it, anyhow. The Weiss boys take on Ebay ... we'll see if it survives editing (LOL).

I understand that cosplay in some circles is getting to be a 24/7 affair. But the spooky time in Japan is Obon, which falls during the hottest part of the summer, in July or August (it's a lunar festival, so it doesn't come on the same day from year to year). That's the time for ghost stories and rituals like the kimodameshi (liver test), where you have to go to a haunted place and leave or bring back a token that you were there. (Wimp out and you're lily-livered, as people would say, since the liver is the seat of courage.)

I forgot to mention that in the last scene of Tenshi ni Narumon, which is the series wrap party with all the characters present and reconciled at last, Papa comments, "It looks as if Halloween and Christmas came on the same day." Since he looks like Frankenstein, and the rest of the family consists of a vampire, a witch, an angel, a catgirl, a mad scientist, and an (partially) invisible girl who goes around half draped in bandages ala Claude Rains, you could say that this remark at least shows Japanese awareness of our conventions of trick or treating, or at least of cosplay partying on this date.

Well ... you guys should be careful what you wish for. I just posted the fic to my website tonight, and here is a link for anyone interested.

The Sniper

As I said before, it's a Weiss vs. Ebay fic, born from a very strange, very stray plot bunny idea. But, it does deal somewhat with cel collecting ... and that bane of all of our existences, sniping. It's rather my first attempt at a humorous fic, so, hopefully, it won't sucketh much ... *crosses fingers*.

EDIT: Forgot to tack on a warning last night --- there's some cursing in here (which, alas, is painfully obvious after reading the first line :emb ). Those Weiss kittens are assassins, after all ... not choir boys. :D

He could -- if he had glasses... AND wings! :D

Alas, not this story. But, read, read! It's wonderful! Everyone should go read now, even those who aren't WK fans (there's no need to know the WK canon to enjoy this story since all of us know the heartache of losing an auction at the last minute).

VHD fans will find something to enjoy too.

*hugs Tex-chan* Honestly, the story is wonderful. People will like it. You'll see!
