Shouldn't I be happier.....

Post by animeobsessed »

Well, I was accepted for another position with the State. This time at the Budget office. It is the same pay grade, but will pay more on the Budget years *every other* b/c of the overtime that is required*. I have been told by friends who work there it is a great place to be, plus there are some perks. Plus there is no supervision!

Anyway, I was called on Friday and told I didn't have the job. Cheri *a friend who was also one of the interviewers* said there was stiff competition and b/c it was obvious I was nervous in the interview I was rated lower. *may not be able to present budgets to key personnel, which is something I know I'm not the greatest at.*

Then about 1 1/2 hours later I got another call from Cheri, saying they had reconsidered and would like to offer me the position. When I asked why, since I had figured maybe it was for the best, she eventually said one person declined *there were 2 positions* and I was the next in line. I accepted the position, but now I don't really feel that good about what happened. Roger said that I do this every time, even when I originally get the job.

Should I be happier about getting a position I thought I always wanted or is it a case of be careful of what you wish for?

A. Be happy you got the position.

B. All you can do is your best , Who are they to base the 1st decision on a subjective impression. Just relax and exceed their expectations.

C. Remember you truly only need to answer to yourself. If you get a little nervous at making presentations, work on public speaking , do your homework on what you are going to present so you lessen your anxiety.

What he said ^ :)

There isn't a soul alive who has total confidence in public presentations and speaking. The trick is to really know your topic and be sure of what you're saying.

I've got the *worst* performance fright but have discovered that when you're passionate about making the topic understood it rolls right off the tongue. *sigh* I can do that singing in a chorus, but never got to a place where I can solo. At least I can present properly now.

I have complete confidence that if I can do it, anyone else can as well. :)

What the wise Kay said. :) I just got a job which requires me making repeated "presentations" about 60 times a night (and no I'm not stripping, pervs!) and I also have an INTENSE fear of public speaking. But Kay is absolutely right, if it's something you're passionate about (and fortunately, I am) it just. . . happens. :)

New things are always frightening and I think we all have our moments of doubt when starting anew. But I'm quite confident you'll be nothing short of brilliant. :D

Confidence grows with experience. The job is going to be taxing at first, but you'll grow into it. It's the same thing many first year teachers go through. They ask themselves "Can I really get up in front of a group of kids and be convincing." You just have to walk in the room with the attitude that you have all the knowledge you need to get the job done. You'll do fine. Congratulations!

Thanks for the advice. It really does help. I have had to presents before and have taken a speech class in college along with the class presentations you always have to do. At my current position, I also was on a team who gave a training. I had a little difficulty to start, but did ok and did better on answering questions.

Like you said, the difference is I will know my subject matter a lot better in my job than for any class I have taken.

I think my other half was also correct, I always get nervous about going to a new dept with similar, but new duties and different people to work with. On top of that, this office is the heart of fiscal issues for the State.

Like JWR said, I will do my best to exceed their expectations.

Thanks again.

First, congrats on your new position! :D I'm sure you'll be fine!

Second, just because I have to bring this up (hence the "trouble maker" in me), I'd be more angry. My work does that too. They tell everyone they're not hiring before confirming with those people they want to hire. I guess common sense goes out the window for managers. And an hour and a half?! Seriously, they could have waited until Monday to give you the "bad news" because look what they did. :x So I'd take a deep breath and go show them what you're made of. :) *GO, AO!* :D

I'm one of those people who gets really nervous before giving speeches or presentations. However, once I start, I'm a big ham. :) I love all the attention. I guess I just hate the waiting to get there part.

CONGRATS AGAIN! 8)

Last winter, I went through a 19-interview process to land a job at Microsoft in the gaming and graphics division.

I understand part of what you are talking about. I admit, that after I got the job (which wasn't easy to do in my case, either)... it really hit me how I was moving from a unix-based medical domain to about as far as I could get from that field. Most of what I excelled at didn't really apply, I'd have to more or less start over building up skills. I admit, it was daunting. But now that I've been there for well over half a year, everything's turning out fine. I've got a long way to go, but it's worth the effort. Sometimes you have to go out on a limb to follow your dreams.

If you got what you always wanted, go for it :-) There's nothing that will make you stay in that position forever. If you realize later that it isn't really what you thought it was, there will be future opportunities to change.

Good luck on your future endeavors :-)

I forgot to mention my reaction to the "I'd be more upset" issue as well. Boy do I hear that one.

There is something very discouraging about being told you've got the job "but" ('we almost didn't hire you because'.. what kind of bs is that??). In my case it was the ever so tactful "What, are you being demoted?" from the person who retired last summer -- she was referring to the rather accurate fact that I won't be a manager/supervisor any longer. This was exactly the point to my taking the job, but ever since she said it, it's been rankling. And I don't get to move into the new digs till April.
There are days when a real buyer's remorse sets in.

So... don't feel bad about feeling bad; it's natural. But you and I both need to take Sensei's advice, methinks, and forget about whatever else other than "I GOT the job I WANTED!" and just kick butt and take names when we do the work.

:D :cheers

[glow=darkblue][shadow=blue]CONGRATULATIONS!!!![/shadow][/glow]

No one is going to CARE how you got there! They'll be asking themselves why they didn't put you at the front of the line when you start "Kicking Butt and Taking Names" as Kay says.

It's always an extra bonus to be able to do what you enjoy in a job. So often we get stuck with what we can get. :D
So take it and run with it! :friends:

And Congratulations again! :yay :bny :dban :bny :yay
