I'm sure you'll get the job!! But just in case they need any extra convincing, you should take your katana with you and give a demonstration of cutting. :dgrin ("Better hire her!! She demonstrates division REALLY WELL!!" :puzzled ) :badass

Seriously, that is impressive to rise to the top of a pool that huge. Great job!! :hello

Sounds like a new diet program they would make an infomercial about.

WOO!!! Congrats on getting an interview. Remember, to just happen to mention that your family has many ninja and samurai in it (even if they don't know it to be true) just as a thought for them if they don't hire you. Plus tell them that you have an army of trained... um... professional lunatics that will rush them at a moments notice. You just have to post here and we'll swamp them. =P

Hmmm.... informatics is the study of how information goes together and forms new knowledge, usually in some kind of statistical/mathematical way. Like through citation analysis and so forth.

So.... I'm guessing bioinformatics is the same sort of thing pertaining to biology? I can envision that high-level modeling might be involved, which is the place where I lose track of the thread of thought because I don't get the math and the statistics you need to follow it.

Edit: /ic

Ask a librarian. We don't have to *know* anything but we do need to know enough about it to know where to look it up.

From the Oxford English Dictionary:
*************************
bioinformatics, n.
The science of information and information flow in biological systems, esp. of the use of computational methods in genetics and genomics.

(examples of use)
The area of modelling mutants from a known structure has been revolutionized by the latest tools of molecular graphics... This is a key element in the whole technology and has attracted much interest (for example, the recent E.E.C. ‘Bioinformatics’ programme). 1987 Science 4 Sept. 1108/3 One of the latest developments [at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory] has been the creation of a new research program in bioinformatics. This is intended to bring together research in computing science, structural biology, and molecular genetics.

*************************

Hey I was pretty close! This is what I get for having read so many dissertations over the past 12 years. (I catalog them here.)

What a NEAT field to get into, Kittens!! Talk about a growth area for research. ("Publish or perish" becomes much easier to deal with in a growth area, for those of you not subjected to this rite of academic foolishness :) )

I have been working on genetics (esp DNA sequences) using combinatorics, stat, and algebra..... So yes, Baakay said pretty mcuh what I am trying to do ;)

Thank you :) :) But this field is very competitive..... :(

LOL :rollin I am pretty sure that some bioinformatists are working on human genetics relate to some weight issues ;) ;)

Thank you so much everyone :D :D

I am sure that you will do great on your interview, but don't be worried about the interview and seem nervous. Be enthusiastic and talk about what you want for the future. Do that and the job is yours :D

Hope you don't need any luck to get it

Good luck anyways 8)

So basically I will leave to Kentucky on Jan 19th and coming back on Jan 21st.....

On Jan 20th., I am giving a seminar talk. But this is not all.... On Jan 20th I am meeting all faculties and grad students talking about my research...... :( so basically 3 days interview!!!!!

Glorff is 100% correct. Those long interviews are a pain for everyone, but bear in mind that the faculty and the students are *really* looking to see whether you're a nice person, you have a clue, and would be reasonably easy to learn from. The fact that you beat out at least 195 other people means that your background isn't an issue.

We've had more than our share of turnover here in the last 3 years with retirements and so forth... and I can guarantee that by the time you get there, the personality piece of the puzzle makes all the difference. (We've had so many people look great on paper, then appear in person and come across like dead fish, or worse... like the lady who showed up for the music librarian job about 8 years ago ACTUALLY WEARING HER HAIR IN A BUN with her glasses on a chain around her neck. We about died -- talk about stereotypes!)

Since we all know you have a lovely and fun personality and that you really *enjoy* what you do (even if it IS math!! :shrug ) you are well ahead of the game. Just be yourself and talk about your research interests and the rest will fall right into place :)

Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwww...... Thank you /kis /kis2

Yeah I think the bottom line is that I do not have selfesteem at all :( So, I always look at negative sides of it :(

I will try to enjoy instead of being stressed out :)
