No.

The Three Laws of Robotics:
1. A robot may not injure a human being, or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
2. A robot must obey the orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.
3. A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.

I think it only seems that way. Nick has given up collecting a long time ago to become rich through SMJ and polish his restored Mustangs. Diana likewise stopped buying some time ago; both are just selling off the precious last of their collections.

But it is true that the pickings are not as rich as they were five years ago when many of us got bitten. Supplies are drying up, and prices for really nice things are on the upswing. To continue to upgrade at the same level, we have to look harder and often spend significantly more. So that puts a squeeze on many collectors, who find that they don't have the time or the fluid resources to devote to the hobby.

Just my impression ...

If there is a disease, it hasn't reached me yet and I doubt it will for a while. ^_^; Shame to see so many collectors giving it up though. But on the other hand, many more have joined. I've only been collecting for over a year, myself.

I agree with Sensei's points though. Just talking to other collectors who've been in this hobby longer than I have, the prices have increased and there's just not alot out there compared to some years ago. But I suppose that's to be expected with a hobby that's just gotten more popular over the years. In what little experience I have, I've had to pay out double for a cel from a wishlist sequence when one just as good was sold for half that amount only a year ago.

I guess peoples hobbies just change also... I used to collect Beanie Babies for around five years and stopped about three years ago when I found that I was more enthused over building up my anime DVD collection. Then I got into anime-related retro games as well as BGC merchandise collecting... and from there, cels. I can't go without collecting something, I think it's some kind of compulsion I have since I have no other hobbies. o.o;

I think I'll be staying in this hobby for a while, probably much to the displeasement of some regular Japanese bidders on YJapan, since I can't think of anything else I'd rather enjoy spending my money on right now. Unless someone happened to be selling a life-sized Hard Suit, I guess. XD

Screw the hardsuit, Nene, I want Priss herself. :D
I only really just joined in early spring of this year, and there's tons of wishlist items for me, so I'm not going anywhere for a while. :^^:

Nene, the cels are easier to store than beanie babies, right? ^_^

Most definately! I still have my beanies stacked on five shelves as well as two 4-tray storage units. They took over my room. >.<

There's a certain number that quit every year and as well as a number of new comers starting out. it's part of the great circle of collecting *cough* The people that quit get more attention though, they've been around, we've had a chance to interact with them, they effect us more in an immediate way.

It's been a slower year for cels, it'll will only get slower. Good year for sketches and other items though, no complaints here.

I don't know if the people who "quit" cel collecting also mean they actually leave.

I quit dvd collecting a couple of years ago but it doesn't mean I don't buy any dvd's anymore, nor does it mean I don't watch or stopped talking about movies anymore.

(at least I hope that's what happens to the "quitters" ;) )

The Doctor : … and then, just to finish off, I’m going to wipe every last stinking Dalek out of the sky !
Dalek : But you have no weapons ! No defenses ! No plan !
The Doctor : Yeah ! And doesn’t that scare you to death ?

Aaww, it just means less competition for all the Ichigo out there!
No, wait, all of us Ichi-lovers are still in the thick of it.
Dang!
C'mon! Somebody that loves Ichigo needs to give it up and sell me all your Ichis! :P
Yeah, that's the ticket! :crackup

Im kinda giving it up for the most part myself...
Well, not like quitting or anything...

Its just... Ive come to the realization that I cant afford the fast growth rate my gallery formerly enjoyed.
I started liking more and more expensive cels.
In fact, I have 2 that I paid over $1000 for and probably shouldnt have.

Now Ive got debt Ive got to pay and since Ive become focused on that, Ive stopped looking as much.
ure, Ill buy one every now and then... but it probably wont be too much too often.
