WOW! I can't believe how this thread went from "let's talk about Furuba" to "let's talk about the scanlations". So I guess the discussions are over?

Okay how's this.
I was reading someone's reaction to the latest chapter and they had a completely different view of Tohru - she was a selfish and closed individual unable to trust others. The way she just wanted Kyo to accept her love and didn't consider his feelings at the time.

She also doesn't allow others to share her problems.

I have always seen Tohru as one of the most giving people, always able to see some good in people no matter how awful they are. *see Akito Selfish was the last adjective I would apply to Tohru.
Any one else have a different perspective of the characters?

I agree. I've never thought of Tohru as being selfish. I think she doesn't share her problems with others because she doesn't want to "burden" them any. She probably just feels they have enough to worry about/on their minds what with being cursed and all. Same with her close friends, Hana-chan and Uo-chan; she just doesn't like the idea of someone fretting/worrying over her. At least.. that's how I view it. I don't see that as her being selfish though. Also, based on the summaries, it seems like Kyou ran off before anything could be settled between him and Tohru. Maybe it's more drawn out in the manga, but it basically seemed like she asked Kyou if there was nothing she could do to get him to accept her love and then... he ran off.

Any one else have a different perspective of the characters?

I don't know if it's a different perspective, but I was always shocked at the differences between Anime!Shigure and Manga!Shigure. I guess they just didn't get far enough in the anime to reflect his... darker... personality, but I was surprised that he ended up being so scheming, jealous, and manipulative.

I don't think I've ever thought of Tohru as being selfish. Naive? Now, there's word I'd use for her.

Shigure however . . . he seems like a dashing, silly, jerk in the anime. Just the kind of guy I usually fall for. But in the manga, I don't like him as much. He seems very mean and manipulative.

I don't think shigure is "mean" per say- though I think the few references we get to a relationship between him and akito (ie, a physical relationship) really show why he is so determined to manipulate everyone and break the curse. It seems like he really and truly loved akito, and when she betrayed him with kureno, I think he wanted to hurt her in the only way he really could-by destroying the bond between akito and the 12ishi.

And tohru being selfish??? Wasn't it kyo himself who told her to occasionally be selfish and tell people what she was really thinking and feeling? Tohru is growing too, just like all the Sohmas-and it's high time she made her feelings known!

Now Kyo needs to get his butt back there! These scanalations are such sweet torture

well, it could all be layers of revenge-I mean, he would know how much Akito loathed Ren- so perhaps start with screwing Ren, then screw with the bond?

that would definately be an...acrobatic way to sleep with someone, since you couldn't embrace. Although...some women like animals (at least that is what all the spam that ends up in my inbox says)

I think the only dark spot in tohru's nature was that she didn't want things to change-the same as akito. Although it seems now that she is accepting that things have to change for life to move forward.

now that's an interesting thought-akito and tohru are really after the same thing

I dunno, I can see how Tohru could be considered a little selfish. She seems to think she's the only person who can handle all the world's burdens at once. In that way, even though she's trying to shield people she loves, she is preventing them from doing a lot of things themselves and denying them the happiness they would get from helping her.

I'm not overly fond of Tohru though

And I think just about EVERYONE is darker in the manga.

But yeah, Shigure's is the most noticeable.
