Impious question for those in Japan or who know its slang

Post by irmgaard »

Let me apologize in advance for any offence given by this inquiry. /sry

In the Anime/Manga BLEACH, there is a vice captain, one Hisagi Shuuhei, who sports a tattoo on his face of the number 69. My question is this: does this number mean the same thing in Japan that it does in the US? I know several Japanese people, but would not feel comfortable asking any of them this question. I am posting this because I have not seen an answer previously posted, and because I am almost certain I cannot be the only one who is curious about this. /?:

If I remember correctly, during the part of the show when they would "introduce" a different shingami at the end of each episode, when they got to that vice-captain, Kon asked something along the lines of, "What the heck's up with 69?!"

I would take that to mean that it has no significance as far as slang goes, but I could be wrong. I know nothing about Japanese slang, and my memory's a bit hazy as far as that far back in the series goes. :shrug

EDIT: We all know what it means in Perv-chan's mind, though. :evil2

Yeah, I would love to get a genga of him sporting that where you can clearly see it.

And, I'd say the "in" crowd in Japan that keeps up with some of American culture knows what it's about over here, and Kon's remark just kind of highlights that. :shrug But that's just me. :P It makes it funnier with Kon pointing it out, because you know the parents aren't understanding it. *snicker*
