I'll be the first to stand up and admit that Howl was NOT Miyazaki's best effort. It got very muddled at the end. Still, for sheer wonder, visual delight, and attempting to move beyond the mundane, Miyazaki ordinarly beats all comers.

(DISCLAIMER! This is ONLY MY OPINION!)

I actually love Wallace and Grommit, but they and the word "Oscar" just don't connect in what passes for my brain these days.

Oh and a very belated, and tongue in cheek reply:

Two words: Lion King. :D :D

Seriously, though... I think part of the reason is that good anime is generally not afraid to show things that aren't all sweetness and light. There isn't always a happy ending, sometimes people die or get blown up or contract terrible diseases, or even conquer the enemy by farting at them. Disney is always whitewashed beyond repair... in my opinion.

Well yeah... I think if you go back and re-read what I posted you'll see that we are exactly in the same boat here. (Question: why do we squirm when someone says something nice about disney. Answer: Lion King. BECAUSE... Lion King, wonderful as it was, was a total ripoff)

See? :)

I think W&G was much more accessible and enjoyable to the general public.
I've seen both and while I enjoyed Howl's, W&G had me laughing through
most of the movie. W&G was a lot funnier while Howl's was nicely made
and had more of an atmosphere.

Read the book! I mean, I absolutely loved HMC, but the ending is so much clearer in the book. Though, the two really are nearly different stories. /swt

I'll agree with kymaera that W&G really was funnier, but it really does seem odd to think of W&G and Oscar in the same sentence. Probably because we don't really have a "Best Comedy" Oscar . . . do we? You never really see comedies nominated . . .

Okay! I admit it! I haven't read this thread. But I wanted to say something silly here. :) I just bought Howl's Moving Castle on DVD although I've never seen it before. It just looked pretty to me. :)

I'll come back and read the whole thread after I watched it.

I really hope I like it. :?

I really enjoyed Howl's! Part of it is the fact that most of the anime that I have watched lately have not had the happiest ending. It's a nice change, once in a while, for things to work out as they should!

Well I finally got to see Howl's Moving Castle this weekend...bought the DVD.

I thoroughly enjoyed it!! And like jenn-b said, I really like the fact that this one had a happy ending. Most of the series I have seen either don't really have an ending or they don't end on a happy note, so this was a refreshing change. And Howl was so adorable... even when
his hair changed colors, he was having a tantrum and feeling sorry for himself...though I guess that was the part when he was half-naked...
Next time I'm at Border's I'm going to pick up the book. Sounds like it would be worth the time to read.

Could somebody actually explain this to me?
What's causing Sophie's appearance to change? She's really old, then just sort of old, then she's back to normal, then she's young but with gray hair, and it just switches back and forth and ultimately she's young but with gray hair. What's the reasoning behind that? If they'd explained it then I totally missed it. ^^;

my answer:
sophie not only loves howl, but she is a very passionate character in general, there is a goodness in her that grows and shows through. it slowly... and inevitably penetrates the spell cast against her. sophie learns to be true to herself and the importance of that. i beleive it was miyazaki's way of showing the depth to her character, and how she overcame more than just a spell. that is my interpretation, at least. :D
