When a friend may die. Someone you have loved for many years is diagnosed with something that will alter their life forever, what do you do?

I've fealt the emotions that title this thread and at this point my heart is aching and I feel exhausted.

Why do the good people get cancer?

First of all, the diagnosis is the worst thing in the world. Because it says "death sentence" to most normal people. BUT!! Bear in mind that there are SO many people who've beaten cancer, and even though they may have had a miserable time going through treatment, they made it with the help of doctors, friends, nurses and loved ones. It can be overcome.

A lady at work has had melanoma in her neck twice since I've been here. The last time, about a year and a half ago, they told her there was nothing they could do. She basically said, "forget that," did a bunch of research, and found some alternative treatments. She then went back to the doctor and said "ok, do the surgery and we'll see what happens." And today she looks better than any time in the past 13 years.

Your friend is lucky to have you, and will do well because of your caring and support.

Reminds me of when Jesus' disciples saw a beggar who had been born blind. "Who sinned to make him blind," they asked him, "the man or his parents?" (I .e., was it his fault, or bad karma he inherited from the previous generation?)

Everyone eventually will die, the good and the evil: but when good people get sick, it's a chance for God to work through you and all of his friends. Physical healing may not come as a result (though I wouldn't discount what God can do through the intelligence and will of doctors and your friend's own will to live on). But I know that mental and spiritual healing begins when someone who's afflicted like this knows that people want to stand with them.

My best friend was diagnosed with an undiagnosable cancer over the summer

, so I definitely understand your frustrations. Be a strong shoulder to lean on, and well, go out and have fun and enjoy life with them! It may seem awkward to do, but your friend will need a break from having that constantly on their mind. And try to keep on a happy face for them.

Can't say when the heartache will stop though, sorry. Y'all are in my thoughts. *hugs*

My heart goes out to your friend. My uncle was diagnosed with cancer last week, too... and they found it after it had already spread.

I agree with what others have said, it doesn't have to be a death sentence... a different uncle, an aunt, and even my mother have had and beaten cancer in my family. True, my great grandmother died from it, but she was 90 when they found it, and she refused to be treated.

I wish all the best for your friend, my uncle (not to be confused with your friend), and all the cancer patients in the world.

Looks like she has blood vessel cancer in her right breast. It's not breast cancer but that's where it's located. 3 weeks ago it was the size of a ping pong ball. Right now it's the size of a large lemon. Surgery is Tues dayor Wednesday.

She is a good friend of ours, Marie and I went through highschool with her and we were in the same graduating class. She is also my son's Godmother.

Advances in cancer have been amazing in the last several years. I hope your friend is able to be helped by some of these and win's her fight. I'm sure sthe upport of her friends will be an important part of her treatment.

Tim and I have a close family friend that just beat breast cancer this year - its definatly not a death sentence. It can be beat!!! We'll all be praying for you!
