College!!

Post by dude_moose »

So I know I've been pretty quiet lately (but still lurking ;) )
but I thought it would be nice to share some news!

Yesterday I got accepted at Cornell University!!
I got my financial package today and it's pretty much the best one I've gotten so far!

I'm so excited!! Cornell was my first choice school and I was really not sure if I would get in or not... It's nice too, because it is only a two hour ride from my house, rather than the six hour drive to my second choice, but it's still far away enough for me to feel really independent.

So I'm thinking of majoring in either Asian Studies or their new major, China and Asia-Pacific Studies...

So, I wanna know... Where are/did you go to college, and what did you major/minor in? And for those of you who are, what do you do with your cels and sketches?

Ooo ooo.. I can answer this one. hahahaha. I went to Penn State University & majored in Astronomy & Astrophysics. Yeah. I still have a deep affinity for science, but I'm more of a computer geek these days. I wanted to minor in math but I had a run-in with one math prof and that ended that. Oh well. :)

Honestly--you should study what you want, but keep in mind that you might want to study something that is marketable for a career later on. I had originally anticipated going on to graduate school, but in my last year, I changed my mind & decided to go out into the working world. I ended up in a field related to my other hobby... computers. I now work as a Technical Writer for an Internet Service Provider, and in truth, I love my job.

I started collecting cels while in college--framed them and actually had them at school with me, but I lived in an apartment and my collection was quite small at the time (its still small by some folks' standards). I used to bring them home with me when I went home because I didn't trust my roommates that much.

Anyhoo.. just my thoughts. :)

Oh! congrats, Cornell is a such great school!! Where are you now... I'm trying to think. 2 hours would put you ... hmmm ... either in Albany or Rochester? maybe?

For some reason I didn't realize you were that young! :P

I went to Colby (in Maine) a very long time ago and majored in English with a minor in secondary education. My areas of focus were actually mythology and Medieval/Renaissance literature, and (this will make a couple of people laugh) the Bible as literature. And I remember very little about any of it, aside from developing a real love for learning stuff, and the fact that I met Nate there.

Hard to argue with any education you'll get at a school of that caliber! /no1

Thanks guys!

Baakay- Yes, I am in Rochester... :x

zerospace- as for marketability for a career... That's why I was thinking Asian studies, possibly coupled with something else, since Asian countries (mainly China) are becoming more and more important and powerful in the global community. But nothing's set in stone at all, it was just an idea ;)

:bny :dban :bubbles :elephant
That's so cool! Glad you were able to get your first choice! /no1

Um. Yeah. I went to college. I think I made a career of it.
Started out as Chemical Engineer, made it through everything but the Engineering Physics. (Organic Chem was my favorite.)
Changed it to Chemistry, and gave Eng Phys a third try. X| I carried my lab grade through, but for some reason just could not grasp the theory.
Got completely flustered, went for English/Teaching. Took some classes in that, kept taking my German classes, started French classes.
Decided teaching wasn't to be my forte, and in a move of desperation to "just get a degree!" (so I could get married - that was the rule: no marraige until you've got a degree), settled on German language. Started taking Russian to go along with the French and German. :shrug I think just because it was interesting and fun.
Ended up with a very well rounded education (probably the only German major that had Calculus III on the transcript) that spanned six years total.

Um. I'm working in the middle of the Pacific doing nothing even remotely connected to anything I ever took in college. X| :P

What can I say? Life happens, if you're lucky, you get to go with it. :D

CONGRATS!!! :jump
First choice PLUS a good financial plan=awesomeness!! :D

I'm a freshman at the University of Hawaii, majoring in fine arts, but I don't know what specific field yet. College hasn't changed my collecting habits much... except now I have an on-campus job, so I have a bit more funding.

Wow aernath, that's quite the college experience. :^^:
I hear that a lot though, people changing their majors several times... and also, what you end up doing after college doesn't necessarily relate to your degree.

Congrats on getting into your first choice university!!!!

Major in whatever interests you the most. Many times you can get a better feel of a field once you have taken a few classes. Sometimes you find out its a great fit and sometimes you wonder "What the hell was I thinking?"

At that age, I had no idea how I wanted to spend the rest of my life. I just took what I enjoyed. Since I liked what I was studying, it was easy to do well. (I majored in biology and minored in chemistry. I also took some art classes and learned just how bad I really was.) After that, I just sort of fell into my career by accident.

I never had to deal with college and collecting at the same time. I waited until I was finacially stable (owned my own home, no debt, etc) before I started collecting. Since that's not an option at this point, I think it might be safer to keep your collection at your family's place. Things can easily get damaged in a dorm. Who knows how careful (or not) your roommate may be. Also moving stuff back and forth for summer vacation and room changes only increases the risk of something happening.

As far as continuing to collect while in college goes, that can be a little tricky. I certainly had no money to for hobbies at the time, but your situation may be different. I wouldn't sell anything at this time, but I don't think you can expect to enlarge your collection very much for the next few years either.

Congrats!

i go to A local college (5 min away)...and I am thinking of going to Long Beach University (CSUL or CSLB....forgot the name)

Anywho..I was going to major in Animation, but thought that that would not be a good major. I need a major that I can get a job at (and there are not that many animation jobs were I live) so I'm going to major in "Criminal Justice" that major alone can get you like in 30 jobs off the bat...hope your major works out..

p.s-My cels live with me, and I live at home since I'm still young :)

Many congratulations! I got an acceptance from Cornell back somewhere nearer to the middle of the previous century than to the present, but no financial offer to offset the out-of-state tuition differential, so I stayed in state and got my BA (in English) at the University of Virginia. Then I took a fairly generous fellowship and went to grad. school at Ohio State for my MA and Ph.D. (also in English).

Regrettably, at this time the job market for English grads crashed, so I spent six more years in post-doctorate training myself in two additional fields so I could get myself hired as a developmental writing teacher.

I always think back to my SATs, which were 50 points higher in math than in English, and wonder what it would have been like if I'd gotten as much encouragement in my science classes (my chem. teacher was an arrogant witch) as I did in English classes. In any case, my favorite course to teach, outside of folklore and mythology (I get to teach manga in the latter) is the advanced writing class for science majors.

My advice: don't get too good at being a student: sooner or later the final buzzer is going to sound on that game. Do internships and summer jobs and everything you can do to get you ready for a real-world job.

And enjoy Cornell! It's a top-flight school that will challenge and excite you to your depths.

I also went to Bel-Rea Institute at the same time I was at CU and graduated there with an Animal Science Degree. I also worked full time while attending both schools full time. Congratulations dude_moose! :yay

Good choice on your major, China and Asia-Pacific Studies should help in many different choices in "real world" jobs.

As for me I majored in Art (after first having some problems with the physics courses of the architecture school X|). I had enough hours in painting, serigraphy(screen printing) and ceramics to claim each as a major. In life after school I went with ceramics. :)

LOL GK,
sniffs.....our little one is all grown up.

Congratulations dude_moose!

I didn't go to college right away, so when I moved to Nevada, I needed college courses to start a new career....computer courses for spreadsheets, and wordprocessing to begin with. Once I landed a job with the State of Nevada *the most reliable employer here* I continued taking accounting courses which were required to move "up the ladder". This was while I was working full-time and had a 4 year old and a newborn baby. In fact, I had to go back 3 days after delivery of Lisa to take my final exam. I was able to continue taking 1, or 2 classes a semester and finally got my AA degree from the community college where I live.

Of course, that didn't help enough since I had also climbed a severak grades at work... and needed more accounting classes. So I commuted 3 days a week after work to UNR where after a total 14 years I finally received my BS in Accounting and am now a Budget Analyst for the State of NV.

I have enjoyed both my girls to go to college right out of high school!!

So enjoy your college years... I really didn't have the time at college the way some do. However, it is surprising how many ppl end up completing college the way I did.

Have you ever thought about going to college right away so when he or she moved to Nevada he or she needed college courses to start a new career?
