The surgery went well. They had to take her back for a 2nd cut because they decided the cancer was too close to her brease muscle. So they removed some of her muscle. (which will be the most painful durring recovery)

What she has is a very rare form of cancer and it acts differently than the normal cancer. Normal cancer makes kind of a ball and pushes tissue out of the way while growing. Her cancer forms fingers and just kind of cruises through tissue. Being as rare as it is she is being overseen by many specialists and they are collecting as much data as possible.

We won't know if she has to go in for a 3rd cut (full masectomy) till next Tuesday at the least. They have to run tests like crazy on the tumor to make sure they got enough tissue surrounding the "lump".

So she's ok right now right? As in she's not worse off (well minus the pain)?

Man, hope she makes it through this whole thing ok. Glad they have a bunch of Specialists there to keep data and maybe figure something out.

The test results on the tissue removed from her first surgery were not good. So she had to go back to have the rest of the breast removed.

She went in for her 2nd surgery on monday. They had to take everything. Luckily we were able to be there before and after her surgery to see her. I got to hold and caress her foot for a while. She's in a lot of pain. But the thing that concerns me most is her psyche, she already has problems with depression based on her own body image, then to have some of the femininity chopped off her body....It will be a long hard road, but she does know that we are there for her.

Sorry to hear about your friend!

If you haven't done so, check out web sites for information and other people who have had that done. Plus how they have dealt with it.

As for personal family experience, my great aunt had that done 36 years ago and she lived without a reoccurrence of cancer until she passed away in 1991 at 85 years of age of congestive heart failure.

Wonderful that your friend has such great friends as you!

My Mom had a mastectomy about a decade before she died ... of something else.

Yep, recovering from the surgery is a painful thing. "Walk the fingers up the wall... keep walking the fingers up the wall..."

But make sure she knows that there are some VERY fine and caring people out there who do prostheses, help make special bras and clothing and swimwear. They are tremendously helpful and sensitive.

And then tell her this: judging by how much she's cared for it's obvious that she is a beautful person. If anyone finds her post-surgical appearance distressing, it's only evidence that they are LOOKING WHERE THEY SHOULDN'T BE LOOKING. And if they're small enough to be looking, their opinion shouldn't matter.

I was never more proud of my Mom than the summer after her surgery. She re-learned how to golf and was swimming within a couple of months. She said "it's my life. To heck with them."

Let's hope your friend's prognosis is excellent now that the surgery is complete!
