general brain picking - do I suck?
general brain picking - do I suck?
I was spending some time today IDing some
unknowns. I was trolling through rubberslug,
the net, Animanga's cel gallery list (3/4 of which is broken links).
I thought about how I could tell you if your cels were from some obscure 1970's/1980's anime, but wouldn't know a "Night Walker" or say.. "Flame of Rekka" cel if they bit me on the a-- er ankle!
So.. I dunno. I was feeling kind of down. I mean, there are all these series no one remembers or few collect. Is it worthwile to stuff my brain with eyeshape templates, or shading techniques used by specific designers? Do I accomplish anything that I couldn't get from, say, watching "Jeopary!" and knowing some of the answers?
I dunno.
Sometimes I feel like that kinda nerdy guy, who tags along after the highschool quarterback, and does his homework for him. Or a dumpster-diver, who collects other people's leftovers/trash.
Bah. I'm being depressing. Ignore me.

I agree with Perv-chan, Zag! You should collect what you love, and it's only natural that you know a lot about what you love. I'm also grateful for your knowledge of these shows ... not to mention hugely impressed by it on a regular basis. You most definitely do NOT suck ... and I hope you don't stay depressed for too long -- 'cuz WE LUVS 'YA!

Why do you think I should collect what you love and it is only natural that you know a lot about what you love?

The Three Laws of Robotics:
1. A robot may not injure a human being, or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
2. A robot must obey the orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.
3. A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.

I totally agree with Leah
Do what you love and collect what you love. It's really nice to have someone with a brain full of so much good info who can ID practically anything, around here, Zag!

Oh yeah.. and there are days I like to call my other half a human encyclopedia, sooo.. to each his/her own!

Oh good heavens.
"Do I suck?" Absolutely not!! Do guys who have stats for years upon years' worth of various sports teams -- or better yet, INDIVIDUAL PLAYERS on sports teams -- suck?? Lordy. They wouldn't think so. What about people who know stamps, or pennies, or... you name it. Do they suck? Phooey.
This hobby of yours leads you to want to know the details. Your encyclopedic knowledge of shows that are remembered by fewer and fewer people is an absolute TREASURE. Don't ever think otherwise!
You're able to lend an additional level of enjoyment and value to the hobby for a whole lot of us who would otherwise not have any idea where the random cels from hither and yon come from. For me, learning about the older shows makes me want to watch them, and that adds yet another dimension to my enjoyment of the newer shows.... knowing something's history is *always* a little extra spice for it!
Nope, dearie, you don't suck. You wanna see suckage? let me show you the Kenshin drawing I did a couple of weeks ago
It will put everything into the proper perspective for you

No one says you have to.

One day, the material you collect and know from the moment of creation on will be the stuff cultural studies tomes are built from, and someone will be after you to pick your brain, pickle the remains, and interface your mind into a vast infomap that will explain how the world got to be the way it is.
Until then, don't let anyone make you feel little. I've been called a walking garbage can of pointless information, Ph.D ... on the other hand, I've been quoted in places all the way from the London Times to (most recently) Men's Health.
If you're having fun as you're learning something, who's got a right to criticize you ... except out of envy?

Never ever disparage the fine art of Dumpster-diving! Treasures untold are there for the taking. One man's trash is another man's treasure, and believe me, I am surrounded by another's "treasure".Zag wrote: Or a dumpster-diver, who collects other people's leftovers/trash.
I don't think so, and I don't think we can. I am amazed at the knowledge of obscure anime you have.....have you contributed to the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy yet? Maybe you should, it might bring you out of the doldrums.Zag wrote:Bah. I'm being depressing. Ignore me.

Thanks everyone.
I feel better. I guess sometimes I see the lovely collections of people like JWR and his GORGEOUS AMG cels, and feel kinda .. second rate for liking goofy/obscure anime.
But then, I know Joe would be among the first to tell me not to be so silly.
Thanks for all your kind words. You're right. I like my "junk". Who cares if it's not everyone's cup o' tea.
I'm glad my random information minutae is helpful. Sometimes, I wonder. Especially when I take a week scouring for confirmation, only to have the person never update thier gallery with the info! XP
hee hee. At least I'm not the only lazy one.

I think you're crazy to think your knowledge of lesser known anime isn't of any use. So there are some people that don't update the information that you give them, so what, I know plenty of people that don't even scan their cels in to update their rubberslug website (yeah Ash, you lazy so & so lol). I think it's great. Whatever part of your brain that you don't want anymore, I'd be happy to use
Granted it may be a little difficult to transfer the data from you to me, but I think we can work something out
I've never dumpster dived before, but after watching half a table with some scribble on the bottom go for $127,500, nothing is trash to me (except of course for all the half eatened food at my house
).
