What does OVA stand for?

I've seen the phrase OVA in many galleries and I was just wondering what that stands for.

I couldn't have said it better than kittens. ;) Sometimes OVA and movie are used interchangably...to me I don't really care. It's just not the TV series, that's all. :)

It's the Japanese equivalent of "direct to video"

Original Animation Video or Original Video Animation are movie quality
productions that are released directly to video (skipping a theatrical release).

Nowadays they also have ONAs (Original Net Animation) for anime that were released over the internet.

"Omakes" are anime that come free as part of buying something else such as an R2 boxed anime set or if you buy a couple of ren'ai games, etc.

Someone was trying to come up with a new term that describes extra anime episodes that come with R2 DVDs, but whose animation quality was only equivalent to their other TV series episode counterparts. It makes sense to use another term for these DVD only episodes because their animation quality is not superior to the other TV episodes as the name "OVA" or "OAV" implies. There's a growing trend to include unaired anime TV episodes onto DVD.

But I can't remember the term he came up with. :shrug
