Re-deciding to collect from an anime
Have you ever made an effort NOT to collect from a certain anime and then later change your mind and decide that you want to?
What made you change your mind?
What made you change your mind?

Generally speaking, all the time.
When I began collecting, my focus was to be on cels from the Akira movie.
I branched off into other series I loved due to availability of such artwork- if it's there I buy it.
The worst thing to do is browse dealer sites and the auctions, I find that I'll always begin collecting new series if particular artwork catches my eye. It's stuff that I don't need or promised myself not to begin purchasing for financial reasons and to maintain the existing dedicated/concise collection.
What tips the balance [my weak willpower] is quality of the art and affordibility.
For example, when I first saw Tenshi ni Narumon artwork I consciously said to myself- "don't even start", because I know I'll get carried away and it'll snowball.
When appealing cels came along I ended up bidding. Lost some, won two [so far]. May be more on the horizon.
Same goes for Platinum Hugen Ordian. Don't know the series but love the characters and style and have since picked up 20 or so cels.
In this instance, what made me buy the first cel was a desire to combine shipping costs from the same seller. I had already bought a couple of other items I wanted but the others kept CALLING ME, they wouldn't desist until I agreed to take them home with me!
Walking away with 10 cels when 1 would suffice is usual practice, LOL

When I first saw Mahou Tsukai Tai, I had absolutely no desire to collect. It didn't really do that much for me, and there were so many cool OVA titles coming out with good artwork that I didn't think I would ever have a desire to collect (especially given the price). After waiting over 5 years and looking back, I had a completely different opinion. The quality of most of the titles was dropping as things were transition almost completely from OVA to quick releases TV, or changing to digital. Now, for some reason, I find the artwork much more captivating and keep hoping I'll stumble upon more good deals.

I needed some time to think this through. I came up with five anime that I changed my mind about collecting - Doukyuusei, To Heart, Sentimental Journey, Tokimeki Memorial and Futakoi Alternative. My reasons are mostly anime-based instead of art-based.
When I first seen Doukyuusei (End of Summer) I liked it, but not enough to collect from it. I think the fact that they were from an adult anime had something to do with it, but mostly it was because of the difficulty in getting decent cels from it (no deputy or Yahoo Japan access back then). I didn't want to buy what little was up for sale at the time. I stared at a Doukyuusei cel at Anime Gambit's for a long time, but decided not to purchase it.
As for "To Heart", I seen the first three episodes in late 1999. I didn't find it terribly interesting. Getting more episodes from it would have been costly and didn't seem to be worth the expense considering how much I liked the first three episodes. I don't like collecting from anime that I haven't seen or liked. I didn't finish watching the series until Dec 2001-April 2002.
Sentimental Journey I didn't find terribly exciting when I first seen four episodes on December 2000.
The first OVA of Tokimeki Memorial seemed really boring.
But after I started playing ren'ai games October 2001, my perspective changed. I'm not sure exactly why. It could be my mind just subconsciously picks out all the storyline possiblities from a ren'ai game anime now. The anime stories feel like alternate reality possibilities because all the main female characters have their own separate storylines.
Anyway...I ended up playing Sentimental Graffiti 2, To Heart and Tokimeki Memorial. That helped support my interest in their respective anime. It raised my interest in collecting from them too. That translation site for the Senti girl's earlier storylines helped a lot. Sentimental Journey and Tokimeki Memorial anime were made assuming that you're already familiar with their games storylines.
In Futakoi Alternatives's case, I wasn't in the right mindset when I first watched it. It was too off-the-wall for me initially. It alternates between comedy and seriousness at the drop of a hat and I couldn't take that the first time through. After getting in the right mindset and rewatching it, I felt much differently about it and decided to collect from it.

you are not alone!
i have this dilemma all the time with inuyasha.
when the right cel comes along, i might go for it. i would only want one. er... but it never really ends with one cel......
the thought still crosses my mind every once in a while. right now, i'm too much in debt from my unicorn cels (and clothes).

That's funny because I was thinking of doing the same thing the last few months when I seen those Ifuritas.Golden Boy wrote:It wasn't a big effort NOT to collect El Hazard, but then one day I saw this Ifurita on YJ that I was thinking of bidding on, but didn't. Now, I'm kinda looking for a really nice shot of her. Hopefully, this doesn't continue with other series I've watched from long ago but haven't collected from.

But I find that if I stare at an auction anime item I'm iffy about collecting for long enough, my desire to get them fades away too (usually anyway).

Well I did tell myself to avoid the whole fullmetal alchemist thing
. Though that was do mostly to cost, I really like the series but the characters and scenes I would want would cost far more than I'm willing to pay. I did however break down on a few ending sketches (reasonably priced, and from a scene I couldn't pass up
).

Scan the sketches, please! With a cherry on top!!I've never seen any sketches from Futakoi though. I wish I had a sketch of the Sakurazuki twins from FutAlt.
...actually any of the twins from FutAlt would be cool.
