WC!!! You didn't like Bubba Ho-tep????? *runs away crying* I thought I knew you!!! :bawl:

And I don't think Jersey Girl is a cult classic because to BE a cult classic people actually have to LIKE it ;) Thus far I have yet to find anyone who thought that movie was watchable (unless BH did....).

I have to agree with BH though, that you can't actually manufacture a cult classic and trying is kind of silly. BUT that said, their attempt is the only thing that actually made me want to see this movie :rollin I probably won't actually do it, it just looks WAY too painfully awful to have to sit through, but maybe one day I'll rent it and get good and smashed - maybe that'll give me a laugh ;)

I picked up Bubba Ho-Tep at the dollar store the other day. I'm gonna watch it just because Bruck Campbell is in it. :D

The only good thing about Bubba was JFK and Campbell's Elvis impression.
Otherwise, bleh. It just didn't have any flare or excitement. But Bruce
is the kind of actor who only involves himself with projects that he feels
will become cult classics. Which is part of why I don't dislike a studio trying
to "create" cult films. Why not? It's a viable genre and it makes money. In fact,
it's better now than ever before because people have stopped going to the
theatres and just wait for the speedy DVD releases. Just look at this thread,
so many people said they were just going to wait and see SOAP on DVD.
Peter Jackson's King Kong is another example. It did well in theatres and
overseas but it made the BIG bucks on DVD. The label "cult" can be too
easily thrown around now just for that very reason (people no longer going
to movies and simply watching them on cable at home or on DVD, netflix, etc).

Maybe I shouldn't have called it a genre, because it's technically not a genre.
It's more like subcultural phenomenon. What about movies that did not
maintain a following for years but simply disappeared and then resurfaced?
That happens often, where a generation of people later adopt a B-movie
as their own.

I see it as a marketing campaign, just like anything else. Studios have
to push movies in the best possible way they can to ensure their success
and avoid bankruptcy. I mean, they do want to continue making movies...
Can't do that without money.

I actually do think it is a decent film for what it is. Is it standard Kevin Smith fare? No. And that's the point. Kevin took a chance at telling a very personal love story, and he ended getting a good performance out of Afleck(he seems to be the only one who can) and great performances out of George Carlin and Steven Root. I don't think it did poorly because it was a bad film, but simply because it wasn't connected to his Leonardo/Red Bank films. BTW, his next film is going to be a horror film. Can't wait to see what he comes up with.

As for Bubba, how can you go wrong with a black JFK and an aged Elvis fighting a mummy who sucks the souls out of old folks arseholes?! Freakin awesome!

That would be my definition of a cult film. I do agree that it is not so much a genre. That's like calling classic films a genre. To me, a cult film is something that does not label itself as such. It's like the old rule of cool: If you are trying to be cool, you never will be. There are two subcategories that I follow:

1. A good film that was not critically well received and/or distributed on a large scale, which is rediscovered later by a new generation and looked at differently. (Freaks)

2. A film that is so terrible that it garners a following for simply being so bad that it's good. (Killer Klowns From Outer Space)

Yes Brian, I read the wiki entry too. :P

It's not possible for it to be cult film till it hits home. The studios don't come
right out and call it a cult hit, so I still don't see the problem with it as a
marketing angle. This happens more often than we care to notice mostly
because of what I mentioned early: people don't go to theatres anymore.

Your out right refusal to see SOAP in theatres is exactly why it will be a cult hit.
You and everyone else in this thread said they'd see it when it's on DVD,
which is what the studios wanted you to do anyway. So, mission accomplished.

I'd have to say that SOAP is already a cult classic just because it already has a following. If this movie just came out as a normal action/horror movie then it would flop and bomb, we all know that. but it's the movie's fans that are generating the hype. It's the first time a cult movie has ever done this, it had fans before it's own release. Actually that's probably where BH and WC are differing and why! I'm a genious!!!!

Actually, I hadn't :P Wiki sucks.

And I never said I'd see it on DVD. I might watch it in three years when it is on the USA network afternoon snake-a-thon mashed in between Anaconda and Python(unless there's something better on).
