Mars on YJ & on Ebay? is that a repro?

Post by BeansATL »

Hi all!

Anyone notice that there's a Sailor Mars on YJ #A-5... which has it's sketch...

http://page4.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/d64879868

Then on Ebay... there's the EXACT #A-5 sequence! This looks to be from one of those SM "Sketch Books".

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 0021967326

If so... wonder if that YJ is a repro from the sketch too!

Odd!

Hope all of you are doing well.

Sincerely, Harry

I saw that YJ auction as well. Are those sequence numbers written in blue
in the upper right hand corner? I can't really tell for sure. But I don't think
repros have sequence numbers, do they? It's a nice looking cel either way,
congratulations to whoever may have won it.

The sketch looks odd to me. Her face is right but the hair seems wrong.
The strands appear crooked. And the highlight color is wrong. It looks
like someone took a sketch of her face and added the hair themselves.
The line weight is all wrong, way too thick. Several spots in her hair on the
lower left look jagged, but that might be from the camera. If you compare
the cel with the sketch, the line work looks completely different. The cel is
much better as far as straightness and thinness are concerned.

I'm not all too familiar with the SM sketch books but I'd think the quality
would be better than that. It looks like someone either made their own or
traced over a real sketch with a fat pencil.

This same seller also has an Utena sketch up that had me scratching my head when I first saw it. It just doesn't look right:

Yeah, that e-bay sketch looks funny to me too. The lines are WAAAY too thick and shaky and the shading is too heavy, especially on her ear.

I don't know too much about sailor moon, but that definitely looks weird to me. :?

Geez. I'd definitely say those sketches are not legit. Someone must've used
an authentic sketch/cel as reference or perhaps a screenshot.

The line work on that Utena sketch is even worse than the Mars sketch.
Way too thick and sloppy. And those highlight colors... eesh.

That's probably why he keeps the winning bidder ID private. Smells like a scam.

These appear to be fakes, especially the Chibimoon sketch.

Why I say this is because recently a cel on YJ from this sequence was sold with its sketch - http://page7.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/g44264682

The cel was sold w/ the sketch and the Toei seal. The cel, along with the sketch, was labelled 'B2'.

Now, compare this to the Chibimoon sketch labelled 'B6' on E-bay, http://cgi.ebay.com/SAILOR-MOON-SETTEI- ... dZViewItem

You should notice that, when the images are fused, they're exact matches....which, shouldn't be the case since the sketch on E-bay is labelled 'B6'..and there's no way a 'B6' would be a complete copy of a 'B2'.

I've already taken the liberty of reporting this auction to E-bay, but I would appreciate if others did the same. Perhaps we can get this seller's listings closed down and avoid some really nasty problems, especially for those who may not know any better.

curious

Post by BeansATL »

Yeah it just seemed rather odd to me that both were up for auction... with the sequence numbers being the same.

Welcome Consumer: - Repro's don't usually have sequence numbers, but with a blue sharpie marker... anything is possible! :P

Something just was off with that YJ auction. I was just curious on everyone's oppinions... as by far I am no good guy collector, and I'm not really the best reference for them. lol

Thanks every1 for all the chat!

Sincerely, harry

I think the general consensus is that there's something weird with the *e-bay* auction, not the YJ one ;) It might not be a bad idea to let the YJ seller know about the e-bay auctions.

I reported the e-bay auctions too :D Stuff like that is just irritating.

The sketches on ebay are indeed the problem here. The seller has traced,
with very fat lines, the originals. I'm not sure how exactly but he must've
either used the originals as reference material (meaning he had access to
the originals) or he simply used a screencap. I dunno which. Either way,
the guy is an extremely wretched artist. When you compare the two Chibimoons,
the one on YJ has the proper line weight and sharpness. It's crisp and the
highlight colors are appropriate. The sketches on eBay are hideous by comparison.

RoboFlonne, you can select which auctions to keep the winning ID private on. As these
auctions are not the illegal hentai you mentioned, I can only assume he's
attempting to prevent people from contacting the winners of the sketches.
We could warn the bidders but not when they're kept private like that.

I highly suggest people contact eBay about this seller and to contact the seller
directly. He should know that we are on to his scam and won't tolerate it.

The YJ auction is indeed the real McCoy - I'ver purchased several items from that particular seller and they all are high quality, legit stuff.

Anyways, I'd appreciate if other users could email E-bay as well and let them know about this.

I noticed that too.

While reporting him, I looked through his auctions and was fairly horrified. X|

Hope this guy gets busted. :x

What an awful seller!!! I'm thinking of sending them a personal complaint...that is just downright wrong! They could have at least put a little more effort into the art...horrible!! 8O
