giving away to new collectors
Would you give away one or a few of your cels to a new cel collector? You know to get their collection started. I don't mean your treasured cels(who would want to do that!?) I mean cels that are extras or bonuses. I gave away 3 of my freebies to a relative who was interested in this hobby and was blown away at how she reacted. She didn't know or care what series the cels were from as long as it was a cel
.

Sure I would! I've got enough extras to last quite awhile.
Unfortunately none of my relatives are into anime (nearly all of them are also at least in their forties) so if I give them away it would have to be to the people I work with if anyone at all. I don't like mailing things so that's out.
There's always the garbage can. Nah just kidding.

I like to do my "house cleaning" when there is a competition here at Beta and they are looking for prizes. I don't mean the whatever freebies that sometimes arrive in purchases, but cels that have lost their place in my collection and I don't feel like selling.

I am willing to "give" many of my freebies to whoever wants them. (OK I do keep a few I really like). I just ask for postage and $1 for gas - waived if people are willing to wait until I need to make my next trip to the PO.
I have a page on my website just for that, so people don't even need to be newbies. Its the second page after my for trades page.

Last year a bunch of us threw our freebies together to give out as door prizes at teh Cel panel during Sakura Con. I would be totally cool with giving away my freebies to whoever wants them.

Part of this hobby is a little word I like to call sacrifice. How can a new collector learn this if they are given cels. Now, would I give them a deal on a cel I have for sale? Sure! I have done it many times. But I was only given cels by very close friends in this hobby after I had established myself. Besides, there is nothing more addicting than saving up for that first cel and getting it.

Re: giving away to new collectors
I wouldn't be so cruel that they might eventually fall foul of this hobby. LOLmajinuub wrote:Would you give away one or a few of your cels to a new cel collector? You know to get their collection started.
Actually, I've given away cels, genga & douga sets to new collectors and people have have purchased artwork from me.
It's nice if you get a reaction like your relative, Majinuub. To see her face light up with joy and appreciation would have been cool. Before long she'll be setting up her own RS page

However, most of the cels I like to keep because I have especially bought them for my collection. I find it REALLY hard to part with anything because they feel like a jigsaw-puzzle piece that helps bond 'the collection', making it complete.
By getting rid of something it makes me feel peculiar and I'll momentarily mourn for it.

I was lucky enough to receive a freebie from Graymousergraymouser wrote:I am willing to "give" many of my freebies to whoever wants them. (OK I do keep a few I really like). I just ask for postage and $1 for gas - waived if people are willing to wait until I need to make my next trip to the PO.

I probably wouldn't mind giving a cel to someone, especially if I know
they'd enjoy it more than I ever would. But it hasn't happened yet. Mostly
because I dislike mailing cels.

Yeppers peppers!
I don't know where I'd be without the kindness of others.
at least 3/4 of my gallery are cels people just sent me for free.
(They are made of awesome!)
I like to pass on that special feeling when you see a package
you didn't expect, and open it to find gorgeous cels you never
thought you'd have. It's a natural high I think everyone should have. =D
Feels good being the giver too.
Sometimes, if I hvae teh monies, I buy things from new collectors to
help finance their growing cel habit. Even if I don't really collect the series.

giving away
i said "no" because the seller gave them to me as gifts. if i do not like them, i am more likely to sell them at an affordable price--even to new collectors.
so far, i have kept most of the gifts that sellers have included with my purchases. and, most of them are on display at my gallery too. i really enjoy them and i appreciate the seller's generosity.
if i purchase a cel or genga lot, i may pass along some free gifts or entertain trades from other interested parties as i have done before.
i think it is best to let the new collector gain some experience on his or her own when it regards purchasing--as long as they are thinking rationally and have a good base with veteran collectors. i enjoy the idea of a new collector networking with a veteran collector as a sort of mentor-or guide into the collecting world. i really appreciate the mentors i do have here in the community and i would have been lost without them. thank you.
