Satisfying losses vs Frustrating wins

Post by Keropi »

How have production art acquisitions been going for you lately?

Do you get more "satisfying losses" or more "frustrating wins"? :)

I've been getting a lot of "satisfying losses" lately. I lose an auction, but I have the satisfaction of knowing that at least I gave it a shot and I tried my best. The other bidder beat me, but I hope they enjoy it. No big thing. I have money for other things.

A "frustrating win" might occur if I win a cel and then find a MUCH better cel from the same sequence a few days later. Or it might occur if another YJ bidder is messing around trying to raise my bid with little intention of winning or extending an auction for forty minutes when I want to go back to sleep or work. Any number of reasons might cause "frustrating wins". Maybe you're getting tired of the hobby. :shrug

I think "Satisfying losses vs. Frustrating wins" depends a lot on how much spare money you have for other enjoyments/necessities in life and how much stress you've been under recently.

Obviously "satisfying wins" are the best outcomes. :D

"Frustrating wins" are far more common. Probably a quarter of the items I win on auction end this way.
I often think "I paid too much for that" or "this 3,000y cel I really wanted ended up costing 70,000y because I grouped another 15 cels to go with it", *nervous lol*

However, today I had a "satisfying loss" that turned into a spectacularly positive result 1 hour later. Those don't come round often.

Satisfying loss -> That doesn't exist for me..... I don't bid on many auctions so when i bid on one i definitely don't want to lose....... Unless you would consider:
a) Placing a high bid by mistake and forget to change it, and some other bidder comes to save the day.... but i guess this doesn't count as it's a mistake....
b) Because later appears a better item that you want more. I don't want to count this as as a satisfying loss because at the moment you win the first auction you are happy..... It's later when you regret it, and you can't go thinking that something better might pop up all the time.

The most annoying situations, at least cel related with this b) situaction, is when you know beforehand that the seller has several sequence mates of the cel, but you don't know how many, and he keeps auctioning them one after the other.... He intercales a better one, then a worse one, then a little better one.... and ussually the last one is the best of all, but that's the catch, you don't know if the one being auctioned is the last or not......

Frustrating wins -> Heh, i have had many of those like everybody else, but i would clasiffy it i 2 groups:
a) The end price is definitely too high but it's a must have item so i would have to eat ramen for the ret of my life :P
b) The other bidder/s act in an annoying way, like extending the auction forever or placing high bids without intention to win because they know that you will still go a little higher......

Heh, and and when a) meets b) then it's the most horrible torture ever imagined...... After one of those many times i keep asking myself if it was worth the effort..... But in the long term i have never regretted any of those.

I usually don't have any sastifiying losses, they're all usually frustrating.... save the Silky cel I lost out on... i had really wanted it, and was very =*( about loosing it until some very nice Outlaw star cels showed up, and since I lost out on Silky I was able to bid and win on my OLS cels. Plus, I know that silky cel wound up in a awesome gallery so it was all worth it. ^_^

No satisifying losses, but there are some occasions when I think "that's good I'll have extra money now" . Of course I find something to spend it on before I finish the though X| No frustrating wins, I'm always a happy little addict when I win :D

Heh...what's probably helped me feel this way is that I've overspent a bit recently. So maybe I'm a little relieved that I didn't win certain things, but at least made an attempt. At least I put in a bid and no one won it for the opening bid or whatever.

Also I think once the bidding reaches a certain level my desire to get a cel/sketch set drops like a rock since I realize it's just too expensive for me. I've also always been pessimistic about winning anything of significance (over $100 let's say) so when I lose I'm not surprised. I expect to lose.

Now if I lost out in a category of item that I've been trying to get for a long time and I still have nothing from, then I'm more likely to become frustrated. But I can't think of too many of those types of items right now. :shrug

I had one "satisfying loss" about a year ago. I bid on a low-end cel that went with some others I wanted, and put in an appropriately modest bid. Bingo, someone topped it. So I came back shortly before it ended and made a somewhat extravagant bid. A couple minutes later the same bidder nibbled up to it. I was so irritated that I actually bid twice more, way more than the cel was worth, just to see the SOB nibble up and up and up. At the last second, I thought he'd get the point and let me have the cel for my last stupidly insane bid ... but no ... he was just as mad as I was, and he topped it. That was ... satisfying.

But mostly I bid my max, and if it's topped, then, well, I shoulda bid more. Mostly I do "Snarfo under the Radar" wins, where I nab something that isn't being watched and maybe isn't even being seen for what it is, and get it for the opening bid. I have been pretty successful with these lately.

My most recent "frustrating win" came when, very much like sensei, I placed an appropriate bid on some
gits:SAC gengas/sketches that I thought I had in the bag - no problem. Yeah right...:x Well, come the last
10 minutes of the auction (Y!J, if you hadn't guessed) someone dropped the hammer with an exorbitant bid
that I'm sure they felt relatively satisfied with, considering the auction was ending early in the morning throughout
the U.S. and this bidder was using a deputy service and saw that my bid was through a deputy service and
probably assumed I was asleep. Needless to say I got a little... *ahem* ...miffed and... um... proceeded to
get into a stupid bid war, pushing the damn auction into a 30 minute over-time.
I won, but it cost me. :bwall

Needless to say, my "satisfying loss" came 2 days later when I didn't have sufficient funds to go after a beautiful
Star Blazers cel off Mandarake that perfectly captured the Yamato with the trademark spiral galaxy background.
Well, after seeing the final result, I'm pretty happy I didn't get involved in that little skirmish. :sweatdrop

Heh, that was kinda like a confessional - very alleviating. Thanx Keropi.

Holy cra**! It is soooooooooooooo expensive /swt

There are no satisfying losses for me /sob I lost a couple nice cels lately (one is Kensji cel at mandarake..... ) since I am cheapo :(

Since I am cheap, I do not also have frustrating win :) (since whenever I win, it is pretty much miracle (I bit very low :P :P)

Someday I would like to have harlock cel /lv but it tends to be expensive side..... :(

That is a nice Yamato cel. I can see why it interested you. The old classics don't show up very often. :(

I wonder if anyone has ever dropped a huge bid to beat a "same deputy service bidder" only to have an outside bidder come along and bid way higher than the first person ever thought it to go?

And to think, if RX hadn't beaten me this morning I might not have even thought of this topic. :D

I did have an experience when I put a reasonable bid on an item, then had someone using my deputy service BidWar me. While I was wondering what to do, someone using another DS made an equally extravagant bid ... in fact, so equally extravagant that it tied the BidWar person's maximum bid. Amusingly, the outside bidder could have bid ten yen more and gotten the lot, but chose instead to let it go, and so my BidWar opponent had to eat every yen of his max overbid.

:evil2 :dgrin :evil2 /no1 /thx :yay

Heh...who says you can't have a lot of fun watching other people bid? :D

Technically speaking, if someone is using the same deputy as you and outbids you, you can always another real-time deputy to raise your max bid to what it really is. :^^:

I haven't done that yet though. :)
