I just had a satisfying loss. 8) I was bidding on something on YJ when a wishlist on ebay came up. I won the ebay auction! :woot: But then the "oh crap" happened when I saw I was still winning on YJ and had been in a bidding war of all things. I was quite satisfied to see myself lose knowing the other person wasn't getting it "cheap". Saved my pocketbook.
Can you hear this fangirl squee?!

I saw a cel that went with my CCS ep. 1 set of Sakura capturing The Fly on YJ, in a set with two other CCS ep. 1 cels that I didn't especially want, with opening bid set at 800 yen. OK, I thought, 2000 yen tops. That's still high, considering that Fly captures used to go for $5-$15 a couple years ago, and this was no brilliant example of the cut. But if it went to 2000 yen (guesstimate $40 with fees) maybe I can unload the other two on the RS Community Shop and subsidize the cost of the one I wanted.

A day went by, and I was outbid by a party that I recognized as a person who especially covets a cel I own and every so often emails me saying that he has a large number of Episode 1 cels that he'd like to trade me for it. I've told him that I like to trade like quality for like quality, not a bunch of low-end cels for one high-end item. But now this party (not a Betarian or RS curator: I'll call him Spoiler to give him a handle as I don't like to use real names on Beta) is putting blocking bids on YJ so that I can't get Ep. 1 cels except through him.

Another day went by, and the bid's up to 5000 yen, a huge overbid. I check, and a third bidder, a Japanese collector I believe, has put in 15 separate bids, inching the price up to exactly tie Spoiler's top bid ... then he stopped, though by bidding once more he could win the lot. And so there the auction ended: since Spoiler's bid came in first, he wins, but he has to pay his full reserve bid.

Now WTF is going on? The seller is extremely respectable and has never used shill bidding in my sight (others I'm not so sure about). And since I don't have a separate id on YJ, it's impossible to tell when I'm going for something and when it's one of the many other DS users, so it's not a friend doing me a favor.

Anyhow, I'm no buddies with the other bidder, whom I'll call Yen Boku, as he regularly scores nice CCS stuff on YJ for fairly stiff prices. He's more than once humiliated me by winning things I wanted at 10,000 yen more than where my limited budget made me stop). So while it's satisfying to watch this auction, I'm left scratching my head.

I'm only guessing that Spoiler has incurred the wrath of other CCS collectors besides me with his tactics, and that this is one way he's being chastized by better-heeled bidders like Yen Boku.

Anyone else see this happening? In this case it's satisfying, but it's also a little scary as next time it might be my nutty reserve bid that Yen Boku inches up to tie ...
... that would drive me nuts if someone did that to me.... @_@ that is crazy!! lol

Had an odd one this morning, was following the close of an auction and a single bid was placed in the last 5min resulting in one extension. The oddity was the bid was for 4,900 yen. Bid increments were 250 yen and the starting price was 1,000 yen. Most people bid an even number + a little extra in hopes of winning in my exprience. I have to infer he bid just below what he thought at a minimum it would sell for.

Anyrate it was rather odd at least to me. I won but in light of the topic I should probably spend some time researching bidding tactics a bit.

I noticed that. I thought that was rather odd myself. But judging from the other stuff he's bought on YJ, I gather he's a serious b-fan. :D

In the auction I referred to on the Speakeasy forum, the auction I was involved in had more than two dozen bids and yet the auction ended just barely under my max bid. At first I was pretty certain that the second place bidder was messing around, but after I looked into it in great detail, I really can't tell for sure if he was (for reasons I won't go into).

I've had a frustrating loss...

I bid 15,000 yen on something and it said I lost to someone else who bid for 15,000!!!

How is that possible! I placed the bid first!

Possible internal bidding war through the same deputy service.
Lemme guess... do you use SMJ?
