A plugin to aid Japanese translation whilst surfing

Post by Krafty »

Whenever I'm browsing the artwork on YJ I'll come across series I want to know more about and need to start with a rough translation.

I'd normally open up another browser window and go to my favourite online translator, which is fine, but I've found another, quicker way.

If you use Mozilla Firefox [and I heartilly reccomend it comparred to IE] you can download various Extentions/Plugins to customise your web-surfing experience.
'G Translate' https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/918/
uses Google Translation services to translate various languages, Japanese being one of them. Once installed, you just highlight the text you want to convert to English, Right-Click then move down to "Translate" and it'll do the job live, without switching to another screen.

OK, from the example below, the translation isn't spot-on, but none of these services are :P At least we know it's from Samurai Spirits...

If you want to see what a whole page or paragraph looks like, you can open the results up in a new tab- it won't override the screen you're currently viewing.

The second benefit is being able to "Search Web For [your highlighted selection]".
Perfect for discovering a little more about that obscure series that may have native fansites and an official Japanese webpage.

Another useful tool is 'Rikaichan' https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/2471/
A dictionary for Japanese to English/German/French/Russian. After selecting a Japanese word on a web page, hover over it with the mouse and a popup appears translating it for you. Again, useful if you want to find out what particular words mean and how sentances are constrcted etc.
This utility can be toggled along with GTranslate and other addons.

That's pretty cool. That's about what I do with my translator program, but if you can get away with doing the same thing for free that's a lot much better.

I'm hoping someday someone will create a less expensive program where you can add your own terms to the translator. That would be helpful for those poorly translated anime titles like "Rhinoceros Kick".

Krafty, are you having few difficulties figuring out anime titles now?

There's a lot of anime I still don't know about, I've not watched any for a LONG time now and surprisingly don't try to recognize the kanji. I'm lazy when it comes to languages.
In the example pictured above I knew it was Haomaru from Samurai Spirits/Samurai Shodown, but I wondered what the translation would throw up ^__^

For other titles I've used the "Search Web For" link and it's effective. Helped me to locate some info on a couple of 1999 Bishojo games that I've been buying artwork from.
Now you're intrigued, Keropi, those games are by URAN- Girl Doll Toy and P.S.
The auctions I won were setups of a background, douga and genga. The dougas look like hanken sketches they're so refined! I was winning several with no competition until another guy joined in and we battled it out to over 15,000y a piece. I hated that, he won the best one too because I couldn't continue *boo hoo*

Oh Zag, thanks for the kisses ;) Glad this post reminded you of these nifty addons!

I don't have anything to say to that.
