I’m not too crazy about the vigilantesque historical Shinsengumi, (the dramatic recreated Shinsengumi is another story

). Although I suppose they could be seen to represent new opportunities for the “common”(non Samurai) man to advance on his own merits, even as they brutally suppressed opposition to the dying Old Order of the Bakufu.
My Bakumatsu hero is Sakamoto Ryoma

, the man who brought together those two massive egos, Kido Takayoshi (Katsura Kogoro) and Saigō Takamori to make the alliance that would bring about Modern Japan!
I also am fond of the forward looking intellectual, Sakuma Shōzan…….
Of course, both of my heroes were cut down by assassins!
